1 Paragraph
Every day in our lives, we communicate. Being able to
express our thoughts with clarity and unity will help us send our
message better.

What’s In

Just Answer Me
Tell me something about what is happening now. Remember to
answer in a complete sentence.
Question : Do you know about the new virus that is keeping
people in their homes?
Answer : The new virus is called Covid 19.
Question : Why are people so afraid of it?
Answer : It is very dangerous.
Question : How is the virus spread?
Answer : People can get it through droplets from the saliva.
Question : How do you prevent the virus from spreading?
Answer : Wearing a mask, social distancing and frequent
handwashing can prevent the virus from spreading.
Question : What will you do to protect yourself and your loved
ones fromthe virus?
Answer : I will stay at home to be safe from the virus.
Look at the underlined words. What do you call a group of
words that expresses a complete thought? Yes! It is called a
sentence.

6
It begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation
mark.
Now, if we put together all the sentences from your answers
above, this is how it will look like.

The new virus is called Covid 19. It is very dangerous.

People can get it through droplets from the saliva. Wearing a
mask, social distancing and frequent handwashing can
prevent the virus from spreading. I will stay at home to be safe
from the virus.

This is called a paragraph. A paragraph is a group of

sentences that share a common idea. They are all written about a
certain topic or interest. A paragraph often includes examples or
evidence to support a topic, idea, or opinion.
What are we talking about in the paragraph above?
Correct! It is about Corona Virus or Covid 19.
Remember these in writing a paragraph:
1. Focus on one topic.
2. Indent the first word of the paragraph.
3. Begin the first word of a sentence with a capital letter.

7
What’s New

Activity 1. Let’s Read a Story

A story has paragraphs in it. Now, you will read a simple story.
You can read it aloud or silently, if you prefer.

will be busy in the kitchen trying new
recipes. 3My father and brother will do

It does not matter where you
are or where you go as long as it is
spent with the people close to you.

Did you like the short story?

Please take note of the font used in the different sentences of

the first paragraph. This will be further explained in our next
activity.

Hang in there!

8
What is It

Based on the story you read, which of the sentences tell you
about the main topic in the first paragraph?

Correct! It is sentence number 1. It is called a topic

sentence. It is usually (but not all the time) found in the first
sentence.

Sentences 2, 3, and 4, after the topic sentence, are the

supporting details. These sentences further explain the main idea
of the paragraph.

The concluding sentence is the last sentence in the

paragraph.

Simply remember these, learners, a simple paragraph has

three parts. They are the (1) topic sentence, (2) supporting
details, and the (3) concluding sentence.

In writing a good paragraph, imagine that you are ordering

your favorite burger from a famous
fastfood chain.

The bottom bun is the concluding sentence

which simply restates or summarizes the main
idea of the paragraph.

9
Remember, a burgercontains these three parts for you to
enjoy and so does a paragraph!

What’s More

Activity 2. What’s the Topic?

One of the parts of a simple paragraph is the topic sentence.
It tells us about the main topic in the paragraph. Let us practice

things to-do in my list even when I am alone.

2. When you have a limited land space, grow plants that

are useful. First, prepare the soil for planting. Next, choose
any available container. Then, gather the seeds that you
want to grow. It does not matter if you start small as long
as you can sustain the effort.

3. The environment is taking a break from the pollution

of everyday activity during the pandemic. Air quality has
improved in the most populated cities around the world.
Some animals have already started a fieldtrip in the once
busy streets. It is a joy to see that nature is once again
flourishing.

10
Activity 3. Support Me
The supporting details of a paragraph are very important
because they give the “real meat” of the paragraph. These details
clarify, prove, or explain the main idea.
Directions: Choose the supporting details of the given topic
sentence. Write the letter of your answer in a separate sheet of
paper. Choose only three supporting details. The first one is
