Maintaining a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or
sneezing is an effective defense. Covering nose and mouth with
bent elbow or a tissue when coughing, or sneezing is a great tactic.
Staying home felt weird at first, but now it feels normal. All these
show that the best way to win the virus is to avoid being exposed
to it, therefore it protects you and others. - fas

What’s New

Constructing a building is just like constructing a paragraph. It is

composed of three distinct parts: Topic sentence, Supporting details
and Conclusion. Now, I want you to do the following task before we
proceed further.

Activity #1. Read the passage below and answer the questions
that follow.

1) My dog Mamot is so much fun to play with. 2) One reason

is that he usually follows me around the house with a stick on his
mouth and drops it on my foot while waggling his tail. 3)
Additionally, he likes a fast-paced game- fetch he can catch just
about anything and brings it back. 4) Finally, he loves it when I
pretend like I’m falling dead, and he runs over to lick my
face.5) All these reasons show why I really have fun playing with
Mamot.
1. Does this paragraph have a topic sentence?
2. What is the topic sentence?
3. Where is the topic sentence/main idea located?
4. Is the topic sentence implied or stated?

Activity #2. Now, we will make a Tree Map or a paragraph structure

map, using the information from the paragraph above.

13
What is It

Very nice! I am very pleased you were able to finish the task given
to you. This time let us get to know the first part of a paragraph
which is the topic sentence.

TOPIC SENTENCE

The topic sentence is the main idea of the paragraph. It

guides the reader by pointing out what the passage is about. All
the sentences in the rest of the paragraph should relate to the topic
sentence.

 Topic sentence is usually found at the beginning of a

paragraph, where it gives a preview of and direction to the
sentences that come after it.
Example: A brownout for students would be a terrible
disaster. They will not be able to check their mail, download
important files or even send documents online. They cannot receive
their e-mails either. They cannot use the printers or even charge their
gadgets too.
 Sometimes, however, topic sentence comes at the end of the
paragraph, where it draws a conclusion or functions as a
summary.
Example: I cannot move files, folders and selected passages to
another location without my computer. I need my MS Word to check
the spelling and grammar and change fonts of my paper. I do all
these on my computer at my own freedom. I really don’t know
how to write a paper without making it directly on the
computer.

 Less frequently, topic sentence comes in the middle of the

paragraph, especially when the paragraph is part of a longer
piece of writing.

14
Example: There are great numbers of deer around here. This whole
area is a great country for hunters and fishermen. There are
bears, mountain lions, and coyotes. To the east there are streams
full of trout, ducks and geese.
Topic sentence or main idea could be:
STATED:
A stated main idea is a sentence found in the reading passage
which states the topic and the main point or points being
made.

IMPLIED:
An implied main idea means that the author has chosen not
to use a statement in the selection or passage to tell the
reader the topic and main idea. The reader must read the
passage and determine the main idea from the information
that is presented.

Example:
Did you know that Arnis can be traced back to native
fighting techniques during conflicts among the various
Prehispanic Filipino tribes? It is even the Philippines' National
Sport and Martial Art now! I wonder how long it takes to learn
Arnis. I saw some players the other day at the park…
IMPLIED MAIN IDEA: Arnis

Congratulations! You learned easily what topic sentence is all

about. Don’t you know that supporting details will help you easily
identify the topic sentence? This time, you will get to know about
supporting details.

15
SUPPORTING DETAILS

The body is composed of the supporting sentences that

develop the main point. This is where you tell the reader about
your topic by including specific details.

Supporting details can be defined as additional information that

explains, defines or proves an idea .It helps you understand better
the topic sentence or main idea. It is more specific than the topic
sentence. If you make an outline before writing your paragraph,
these are items A, B, and C.
I. Main Idea or Topic Sentence
A. _________________________________
B. _________________________________ Supporting
C. _________________________________ sentences
Example:
I really like apples. They are sweet, crisp, and juicy and just
filling enough to take the edge off my appetite. When I eat apples, I
also think of the vitamins and minerals they contain, and the fiber
they supply to keep me healthy. You must avoid eating garbage like
junk foods.
Main Idea: I like apples.
Supporting Details: (for the following reasons)
They are crisp, juicy, and filling.
They provide healthy vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
There are also instances that a sentence does not support the main
idea. This is called “IRRELEVANT SENTENCE”. It does not belong
in the paragraph; thus, such a sentence should be omitted. You
must not include details that do nothing to support the topic.
Irrelevant sentence: You must avoid eating garbage like junk foods.

16
Very nice! I am very pleased you were able to learn all about
supporting details. Now, let us proceed with the last part of a
paragraph which is the concluding sentence.

CONCLUDING SENTENCE
A concluding sentence shows that you are bringing an end to
a paragraph. It is the last sentence of the paragraph. It concludes,
or wraps up, a paragraph. It lets the reader know that you have
finished talking about the idea introduced by the topic sentence.
For each paragraph, you should be able to identify the key
points. Remember, the concluding sentence should not include
any information that was not discussed in the paragraph.
A good conclusion should finish with a strong statement that
summarizes the topic and satisfies the reader.
Below are some transitional words which are good starters that
you may be able to use as a guide.

 In conclusion  Thus
 Therefore  Finally
 As expressed,  Lastly
 Overall  For this reason
 As a result  In general

A concluding sentence often has one of these four important

purposes:
1. It restates the main idea or summarizes the main points
of the paragraph.
2. It gives an opinion.
3. It offers a suggestion.
4. It makes a prediction.

Your concluding sentence should end your paragraph smoothly.

It is also a place where you can do something creative or express
your own point of view.

17
Now we are done with the three parts of a simple paragraph. Let’s
try to see now the map below that could help us combining the
parts to write a good paragraph.

Paragraph Structure Map

In this concept of paragraph writing, we will be using a Tree
Map (see example below). You must begin each paragraph by
clearly stating the topic sentence. Then tell more about that idea
by giving details that are related to the topic. These examples may
answer questions such as how/why/ or what kind. The details
may also provide reasons, facts, or proof about the topic sentence.
The concluding sentence wraps up the whole paragraph.

What I Have Learned

Now, let me check how far have you learned from our topic.
Complete the paragraph by filling in the important details about a
paragraph.

I have learned from this lesson that a strong paragraph

contains three distinct components: __________________________,
_______________________________ and __________________________. I
also discovered that the topic sentence is the __________________of
a paragraph. Topic sentence or main idea could be found in the
______________________, __________________________ or
_______________________.
I also realized that ____________________________can be
defined as additional information that explains, defines or proves
an idea. On the other hand, a sentence that does not support the
main idea is called ____________________________.
Lastly, __________________________ brings an end to a
paragraph. It is found in the last sentence.

What I Can Do

Activity # 1 FLUFFY SLIMY PARAGRAPH
