Welcome to the English 3 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Recognize adverbs of


manner. EN3G-IVi-j-6-1

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping

Adverbs of Manner tells you how something happened. They are
usually placed either after the main verb or its object.
You need to really know about adverbs of manner.

What’s New

Have you ever lost something? How did you feel?


When one of the 100 sheep of a shepherd was lost in the desert, the
shepherd tried his best to find it. What a happy feeling when he
found it and reunited with the 99 other sheep.
Just like that story, today, you will encounter a story of bravery and
diligence. Find out a father’s adventure in the story.

Lost
Mary Grace F. Rivera

Mang Ernesto is a hardworking fisherman and a loving father


to his three children. He lived on a beautiful island together with his
kind and lovely wife, Mona. Mang Ernesto catches fish diligently
everyday. He sells the fish in the nearby village.

One day, Mang Ernesto heads fast in the sea to catch more
fish. He was not able to hear the latest news about the coming
typhoon. While in the sea, he saw many fish and hurriedly caught
them with his net.

On his way home, the weather changed. Big waves roared
towards the boat of Mang Ernesto. A strong wind carried his boat
to different directions. Mang Ernesto was lost! He was afraid but he
calmly looked for some clues to go back home.

It was already dark, but he sailed on. He was so tired and


hungry that he fell fast asleep. His boat was carried by the waves
that he woke up in a different place. Meanwhile, his family sadly
heard the news that Mang Ernesto was missing. They prayed to God
asking that Mang Ernesto will be home safely.

Not long after, the weather was fine, the sun shone brightly.
Mang Ernesto regained his strength. He bravely sailed at sea. He
smartly followed the direction of sunrise. He quickly spotted their
island. He paddled his boat towards it. He smilingly waved at his
family who was waiting for his return. At last, he was finally home!

Adverbs of manner tell us the way how something is done. It


added to the verb to modify or change its meaning.
Example:
Sentence 1. Mang Ernesto caught fish diligently.
Question: Who caught fish? (It’s Mang Ernesto)
How did he catch the fish? (He caught fish diligently.)

Adverbs of manner can be added to the verb to modify or

change its meaning and gives more information how he caught

fish. It cannot be put between a verb and its direct object.

A. Mang Ernesto caught fish diligently.

(After the main verb or after the object. It can be placed at the
end of the clause).

An adverb of manner can also be written this way.


B. Mang Ernesto diligently caught fish.

(It can be placed before the verb ‘caught’).

1. Zoe painted a seascape beautifully.

Verb
Adverbs of Manner is placed at the end of the verb (painted) or
direct object.

It could also be written this way:

It can be placed before the verb ‘painted’.

Adverb of Manner that does not have -ly such as fast, well, and
hard.

Read the selection well. Take note of the words that are
adverbs of manner.

It was a Table Manner Activity for all Grade Three Classes. All
children excitedly prepared their packed lunch. They neatly
placed them on top of the table.

When the teacher signaled the time for lunch, everyone


cheered. The children washed their hands with soap and water.
They gently put their placemats on the table along with their plate
of rice, a bowl of soup, viand, and a glass of water. They also put
the spoon and fork.

The children prayed and gave thanks for their food. They ate
their delicious meals happily. Some children quickly ate their food.
Other children ate their food very slowly. The teacher reminded
them to chew their food carefully.
