MELC Competency Grade 2 Quarter 3
Learning Competency: Listen and respond to texts to clarify meanings heard while
drawing on personal experiences
The following are the pre-requisite skills (sub-tasks) to be mastered by the learners before they listen and
respond to texts to clarify meanings heard while drawing on personal experiences:
The sub-tasks of the learning competency No. 14 in the MELC Grade 2 Quarter 3 should be allotted 3 hours and
33 minutes. Sub-task No. 1- should be taught for 50 minutes, another 50 minutes for sub-tasks No. 2-3 and the
last sub-task should be allotted also 50 minutes duration.

Getting Meaning through Contextual Analysis
Procedure
I. Routine Activities
- Video with teacher aided by presentation slides
a. Doing routine activities
- Prayer
- Greetings
- Checking of attendance
III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Review
-Recall synonyms. Ask the pupils to pick out pairs of words that are synonyms.
2. Motivation
-Play the game charade. Prepare the words on strips of paper. Call one pupil to become the “it”
And the rest of the cl;ass will give clues for the “it” to guess the word. Do the charade with different
pupils as “it”.
Rosa is afraid of little dogs and really frightened of tiny frogs. She’s
so afraid of many things.
2. Discussion / Analysis
-Go back to the sentences in the presentation.
Ask:
What does Mercy love to do in the park? (stroll)
What word in the next sentence has a similar meaning to stroll? (walk)
What can you say about the narra tree? (sturdy)
What word in the next sentence means sturdy?(strong)
How does Rosa feel about little dogs? (afraid)
What word in the sentence has the same meaning as afraid (frightened)
What did you do to find the meaning of unfamiliar words? (analyzed the sentences)
What words in the sentences help you determine the meaning of unfamiliar words?
(Introduced and explain to the pupils that those are called context clues.)
What should you do to understand what you read and hear? (Be attentive)
Give other words whose meanings are not familiar to the pupils. Use them in sentences and ask pupils to
give the correct meaning of these words by analyzing the sentences. Present sentences to the pupils and
let them look for the meaning of the underlined words by looking at the clues found within the
sentences. (The teacher will provide the sentences)
3. Generalization:
What help us determine the meaning of unfamiliar words? (Context clues are parts of a sentence
that help determine the meaning of a given word)

A. Application
Group Activity:
Divide the class into three. Ask the pupils to discuss the correct meaning of the unfamiliar words
by analyzing the sentences in the activity cards
Group A.
Myra has fair skin. I admire her light-colored skin.

Sandra look cross. She is angry when someone says
bad things about her.

2. Individual Activity
Read the sentences below. Encircle the best meaning of a given word.
1.Which do you prefer apple or watermelon? If you like apple, go to the market and enjoy its
delicious taste.
2. The teacher asks the pupils to ring the letter of the correct answer but some of them circle the
wrong answer.
3. I got up early and rushed to school after breakfast. I went in a hurry so I won’t be late.
4. The task was difficult, but this work had to be done before nightfall.
5. He had a lot of work to accomplish so he decided to do it right away so he could finish them
on time.
IV. Evaluation
Look for the meaning of the underlined word in the sentences. Write your answer inside the box.
1. There are guest coming tomorrow. One of the visitors is Mayor Maria Lourdes Fernando.

Letter sounds -/s/ /t/ /r/ /c/ /p/ /l/
Put together 2 or more of these letters to produce consonant clusters
/blends.
(Have pupils do Let’s Try on LM)
2. Motivation
Say : Who are the people in your school? Do you know their names? Show the pictures of your
principal, school nurse, janitor, security guard, teachers, school bus driver and let the children tell their names.
Ask: Who or what do you want to be? What do you want to do to serve your country?
(Have pupils do Get Set on LM)
Comprehension Questions:
Have the pupils read the story by group. Ask them to give words that begin with consonant
cluster/blends from the story read.
3. Application:
Have pupils tell something about themselves as a proud Filipino. Let them read the story and
have them substitute the underlined words using their own words describing about themselves.
