MELC: Recognize describing words for people, objects, things, and

places (color, shape, size, height, weight, length, distance, etc.)
EN1G-IVf-j-5
Preface
This Division-led Supplementary Learning Resource Material is developed in support to the
K to 12 English Curriculum. It is aligned to the Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) to help
students enhance their critical thinking and reading comprehension skills by answering activities
that are meaningful to their lives, which can be done by themselves or with a minimum assistance
from the teachers, parents and guardians even at home.
This learning material contains Activities, Rubrics, References and Answer Keys. It consists
of four learning components with meaningful and creative learning activities using contextualized,
localized and authentic reading texts. To address the following Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC), the tasks are carefully outlined to make it more user friendly, thereby making
learning more independent and more meaningful to the learner.

The learning tasks are based on four components:

Part 1: Stream Source. This focuses on the activities that activate the learners’ schema or prior
knowledge to make meaningful connections of their past experiences or previous learning to the
new lesson. Learners in this part also develops their vocabulary skills by unlocking unfamiliar words
found on the text.

Part 2: Let Flow. This enables the learners to engage text exploration. The readers on this part
start to interact with the text and keep track of their comprehension on the material read. Students
also give their personal insights and responses based on the given tasks.

Part 3: Burst Forth. It is the time when readers are engaged to answer varied activities to learn
new concepts. They raise questions to clear doubts, make interpretation, summary, synthesis and
personal judgment. This part is divided into three parts:
A. Guided practice: The students are exposed to guided activities which
develop their first level of understanding.
B. Shared practice: The learners develop their skills in making analysis and
establish connections of the new concepts learned to a real-life scenario.
C. Independent practice: The readers in this part are exposed
independently to the more challenging tasks that will develop their critical thinking
and reading comprehension skills

Part 4: Spring on. The learners connect their new learning to other content areas as they explain
and give insights on their personal reflections. They are geared to create a new product out from
their learning by engaging differentiated performance tasks.
