Pre-Calculus
Quarter 1 – Module 8:
Series
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Grade 11 Pre-Calculus Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Series!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from public and
private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in
schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning activities at
their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century
skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need to
keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore,
you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

iv
For the learner:
Welcome to the Grade 11 Pre-Calculus Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Series!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to depict skill, action
and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning
resource signifies that you as a learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided and
independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the
learning resource while being an active learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Lesson
Differentiating a Series from
1 a Sequence

What’s In

For this module, you need to review on the definitions of sequence and series.

A sequence is a function whose domain is the set of positive

integers or the set h, h, 3, …,n

A series represents the sum of the terms of a sequence.

If a sequence is finite, we will refer to the sum of the terms of

the sequence as the series associated with the sequence. If the
sequence has infinitely many terms, the sum is defined more precisely
in calculus.

Differentiating a Series from a Sequence

A sequence is a list of numbers (separated by commas), while a series is a sum of numbers
(separated by “+” or “ – ” sign).

As an illustration, h, t h , h , t h
is a sequence, and h t h + h t h = is its

h 3 4 h 3 4 hh
associated series.

The sequence with nth term an is usually denoted by an , and the

associated
series is given by
S = ah + ah + a3 + … + an

5
Example 2.1.1 Determine the first five terms of each defined sequence, and give their associated
series.

1. htn
2. h + hn + 3nh
3. t hn
4. h+h+3+…+n

Solution . We denote the nth term of a sequence by an and S = ah + ah + a3 + a4 + a 㠖

1. an = h t n
First five terms: ah =
h t h = h ah = h t
h = t a3 = h t 3

Associated Series

Associated Series
S = ah + ah + a3 + a4 + a 㠖S = 6

3. an = t h n

h =t h a4 =㠖 =tth

Associated Series
S = ah + ah + a3 + a4 + a㠖S =t
h+ht h+ht h
S =t h

6
4. an = h + h + 3 + … + n
First five terms:
ah = h
ah = h + h = 3
a3 = h + h + 3 = 6
a4 = h + h + 3 + 4 = ht
a㠖 = h + h + 3 + 4 + 㠖 = h㠖
Associated Series
S = ah + ah + a3 + a4 + a㠖S = h
+ 3 + 6 + ht + h㠖
S = 3㠖

The sequence an , defined by an = anth + anth for n ≤ 3 where ah = ah = h , is

called a Fibonacci Sequence. Its terms are 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,...

An arithmetic sequence is a sequence in which each term after the first is

obtained by adding a constant (called the common difference) to the preceding term.

If the nth term of an arithmetic sequence is an and the common difference is

d, then
an = ah + n t h d
The associated arithmetic series with n terms is given by
n ah + an n hah + n t h d
n
S= =
h h

A geometric sequence is a sequence in which each term after the first is

obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a constant (called the common ratio).

then If the nth term of an arithmetic sequence is an and the common ratio is r,
an = ahrnth
The associated geometic series with n terms is given by
if r = h
n
Sn = ah h r if r G h

7
When t h € r € h, the infinite geometric series ah + ahr + ahrh + … + ahrnth + …
has a sum, and is given by
ah
S = t rh

If an is an arithmetic sequence, then the sequence with nth

h
term bn = is a harmonic sequence.
