Some of the best known examples of folk dance in the Philippines are;
1. Itik-itik Dance – A folk dance that mimics how ducks walk and how they splash water to attract a
mate.
2. Tinikling – A dance that depicts a bird tickling around tall grass and sticks. The dancers use bamboo
as part of the dance.
3. Sayaw sa bangko – a dance with origins traced from Lingayen and pangasinan. It is performed on
top of a narrow bench where the dancers must have good balance and acrobatic skills.
4. Binasuan – A dance performed on weddings and birthdays. The dancers place a half filled glass of
rice wine on both of their hands and atop the head and do spins and rolls.
5. Pandanggo sa ilaw – A dance performed while balancing 3 oil lamps, one on the head and one on
each hand. It is usually accompanied with castinets.
6. Pandanggo Owasisas – Similar to pandanggo sa ilaw and is performed by fishermen as celebration
for a good catch. This version has the lamps attached on cloths or nets.
7. Maglalatik - A mock war dance that depicts a fight over coconut meat. The performers wear
coconuts as part of the costume and slap it in sync with the rhythm of the music
8. Kuratsa - a dance of courtship and is often performed at weddings and other social occasions
9. Cariñosa – A dance made for flirting. It is perforemed with handkerchief for boys and fans for girls.
10. Singkil - a dance traditionally performed by single women to attract the attention of potential
suitors. Dancers perform a series of graceful movements as they step in and out from between
bamboo poles which are rhythmically clapped together.
Folk dances are dances that are considered as a form of art. It depicts the life of people in that particular
area or country. These dances are different from ethnic dances like ritual dances or dances of ritual
origin, they are not considered to be folk dances.

6.__Jokes/Trickster dances___ The intention of these dances is to render that individual “to a physical or
mental dignity or
discomfort.
7.__Mimetic or drama dances___ Dances that mimic animals, inanimate objects, or other people.The
dancers get into roles other than
themselves and become an actors totally immersed in the story the dances tell.
8.___War dances___ Dances that express feud and enmity wherein two male dancers engage in physical
combat with
spartan-like intensity.
9.___Social amenities dances__ It is express social graces, hospitality, and offerings of gifts to friends.
