As pre-service teachers, how do you
prepare yourselves for a challenging task
of making learners of today live
meaningful lives tomorrow? Of course, we
know that we teach students because we
are preparing them for the future, right?
And to do that, we have to visualize
creative, innovative ways to prepare
diverse learners in their own cultural
context without forgetting that they live in
a global village. We preserve everybody’s
cultural identity but at the same time, give
them what we called global education.
WHAT IS GLOBAL EDUCATION?
UNESCO defines global education:
- As a goal to become aware of educational
conditions or lack of it, in developing
countries worldwide and aim to educate all
people to certain world standards.
These standards help ensure that a higher
level of learning is attained, guide teachers
in the process of assessment.
- As a curriculum that is international in
scope which prepares today's youth around
the world to function in one world
environment under teachers who are
intellectually, professionally and
humanistically prepared.
Global Education must prepare students to
understand perspectives of other people
and cultures across all grade levels and
disciplines so as to be able to solve
common problems and develop better
working relationships.
The United Nations entered an agreement
to pursue 6 goals to achieve some
standards of education. To achieve global
education, the UN sets the following goals:
- Expand early childhood care
education
- Prepare free and compulsory
primary education for all.
It aims to develop child's social,
emotional, cognitive and physical
needs in order to build a solid and
broad foundation for lifelong
learning
- Promote learning and life skills
for young and adult;
- Self-awareness.
- Empathy.
- Critical thinking.
- Creative thinking.
- Decision making.
- Problem Solving.
- Effective communication.
- Interpersonal relationship
- Increase adult literacy by 50%.
- Empower learners with
functional literacy and life
skills,
- Reduce illiteracy rates to
5% or less by 2015,
- Foster community capacity
building and development,
- Promote cultural
preservation and
development and.
- Create job opportunities for
learners in order to combat
unemployment and poverty.
- Achieve gender parity by 2005,
gender equality by 2015.
- Improve quality of education.
Global education brings us to understand
the connectivity of each member citizen in
the planet. It provides equal opportunity
and access to knowledge and learning tools
which are the basic rights of every child in
the global community.
Now, are we prepared to provide global
education in our respective future school
assignments? Are we preparing ourselves
to become a global teacher?

Looking back at the concept of global

education, how do we define a global
teacher? Is this teacher somebody who
teaches abroad?

NO.

A global teacher is a competent teacher

who is armed with enough skills,
appropriate attitude and universal values to
teach students with both time tested as well
as modern technologies in education in any
place in the world. He or she is someone
who thinks and acts both locally and
globally with world-wide perspectives.
