IVF COMPUTATION

1. WHAT IS THE DROP RATE? (MACRO SET)

drops/min = Amount of solution (ml) X drop rate factor (drop/ml)

Hours to administer 60(min/hr)

Example 1: The doctor ordered to infuse PNSS 1 liter to run for 8 hours. Drop factor is 20gtts/ml. Compute the drop rate.
drops/min = Amount of solution (ml) X drop rate factor (drop/ml)
Hours to administer 60(min/hr)

= 1000 ml x 20 gtts/min = 41.66 drops/min

8 hours x 60 min/hr
• Therefore, you have to allow the fluid to flow at a rate of 42drops/min.

Example 2: The doctor ordered to infuse D5W 1 liter to run for 12 hours. Drop factor is 15gtts/ml. Compute the drop
rate.
drops/min = Amount of solution (ml) X drop rate factor (drop/ml)
Hours to administer 60(min/hr)

= 1000 ml x 15 gtts/ml = 20.8 drops/min

12 hours x 60 min/hr
• Therefore, you have to allow the fluid to flow at a rate of 20.8 drops/min

Example 3: The doctor ordered to infuse D5W 500 ml to run for 10 hours. Drop factor is 10gtts/ml. Compute the drop
rate.
drops/min = Amount of solution (ml) X drop rate factor (drop/ml)
Hours to administer 60(min/hr)

= 500 ml x 10 gtts/ml = 8.33 drops/min

10 hours x 60 min/hr
• Therefore, you have to allow the fluid to flow at a rate of 8 drops/min
HOW MANY HOURS TO CONSUME?

Question: During midwifery rounds the midwife noted iv fluid level of PNSS 700 ml. Calculate how many hours it will be
consumed if the drop rate is 20gtts/min and drop factor of 15 gtts/ml.

Formula: drops/min = Amount of solution (ml) X drop rate factor (drop/ml)

Hours to administer 60(min/hr)

Hours to administer = amount of solution in ml x drop rate factor

Drop rate x 60 min/hr
Hours to administer = 700 ml x 15 gtts/ml
20 gtts/min x 60 min/hr
= 10,500 = 8.75 hrs
1,200

WHAT IS THE DROP RATE? (MICRO SET)

Example 3: The doctor ordered to infuse PNSS 500 ml to run for 10 hours using micro set. Compute the drop rate.
drops/min = Amount of solution (ml) X drop rate factor (ugtts/ml)
Hours to administer 60(min/hr)

= 500 ml x 60 ugtts/ml = 50 micro drops/min

10 hours x 60 min/hr
• Therefore, you have to allow the fluid to flow at a rate of 50 micro drops/min

Example 4: The doctor ordered to infuse PNSS 1L to run for 12 hours using micro set. Compute the drop rate.
drops/min = Amount of solution (ml) X drop rate factor (ugtts/ml)
Hours to administer 60(min/hr)

= 1000 ml x 60 ugtts/ml = 83.3 micro drops/min

12 hours x 60 min/hr
• Therefore, you have to allow the fluid to flow at a rate of 83 micro drops/min
