III. Answer the following:-

24.What is wool?

Baby Usha N AIPSPage 1

ans:_Wool is the textile fiber obtained from sheep and other animals, including cashmere and mohair
from goats, qiviut from muskoxen, hide and fur clothing from bison, angora from rabbits, and
other types of wool from
camelids_________________________________________________________________

25.What is Sericulture?
ans:___Sericulture, or silk farming, is the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk____

26.What is silk? Give some charactestics of silk fibre.

_ans:__Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. some characteristics are :
1. soft
2. smooth
3. light weight
27.Differentiate the following

a) Shearing and reeling.

ans:__1. Shearing is the removal of the hair of sheep with a thin layer of skin
2.Silk reeling is the process by which a number of cocoon baves are reeled together to
produce a single thread.____
b)Plant fibres and animal fibres
ans:_1.Plant fibres are the fibre which are obtained from plants whereas,
2. Animal fibres are fibres which are obtained from animals.
example of plant fibre : jute , cotton etc
example of animal fibre : silk , wool etc
c)Moulting and reeling
ans:__moulting- the process of shedding the skin , to grow a New one by insects, like a
caterpillar.
reeling- it is a method of obtaining silk fibres from the cocoon's.

28.How can we distinguish between natural silk and artificial silk?

29.What are the health hazards in Sericulture? How can be they prevented?
ans: The usage of chemicals to dye the silk may result in irritation of eyes, infections of
skin, lungs and breathing problems. Health hazards in sericulture: 1. Due to the machines
with loud noises, they can lead to hearing disorders of the workers.
they can be prevented by:
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Do not breathe vapours or sprays.
Wear protective clothing

30.Describe the steps in the production of wool

Baby Usha N AIPSPage 2

ans: a. Shearing, also known as die cutting, is a process which cuts stock without the
formation of chips or the use of burning or melting.
b. The process of cleaning wool is called scrubbing. False. A pelt is the hide of a sheep.
True. The waves in the wool fiber are called crimp.
c. Fiber (especially wool) scouring involves the use of hot water and detergents to remove
soil, vegetable impurities, grease and other contaminants from fibers.
d. The fleece is sorted into grades by individuals who have developed a keen sense of touch.
They sort the fibers according to fineness, length, and color. Each wool product is made from
a different type of fiber, and the sorter divides the fleece accordingly.
e. Carding is a mechanical process that disentangles, cleans and intermixes fibres to produce
a continuous web or sliver suitable for subsequent processing.
f.Spinning is the twisting techniques where the fiber is drawn out, twisted, and wound onto a
bobbin.
g. The objective of wool fabric finishing is to develop the desired properties in woollen and
worsted fabrics that meet the specified end use requirements of consumers. Finishing is a
sequence of dry and wet processes that is carried out in a logical order.
31.How are fibres classified? Give examples.
ans: Natural fibres can be classified according to their origin. The vegetable, or cellulose-
base, class includes such important fibres as cotton, flax, and jute. The animal, or protein-
base, fibres include wool, mohair, and silk. An important fibre in the mineral class is asbestos.
32.Explain the process of obtaining silk from cocoon
ans: Cocoons of silk moth are used to obtain the silk fibres. These cocoons are kept under
the sun or boiled or exposed to steam. The silk fibres is then separated. This process of
obtaining wool from the cocoons is called reeling the silk
33.Explain the life cycle of silkworm with the help of a neat labelled diagram.
