Movie Title: The Social Dilema

Genre: Documentary Film, Science and Nature

Summary of Movie:-

The documentary starts with a collection of ominous lines. A lot of technological experts
mention the alternate side of social media and the way a function that was meant to get people
together has eventually become something far more bigger and worse than what it was meant for.
The people who gave interviews include former employees of Google, Facebook, Pinterest,
Twitter and other social media players who talk about themes they have helped create.
Other people who have had a change of heart include Tim Kendall, the person who helped
Facebook to earn money and is currently the CEO of Moment, an application that promotes more
safe and healthy mobile phone usage, and Guillaume Chaslot who was formerely a software
engineer at Youtube.

Together, these interviewees explain how people have become a piece of chess in the game
between social media and brands that want to advertise. Their cautions resulted in the lesson that
these companies are in a fight for the attention of customers and are finally in the process of
enabling behavioural change to satisfy their advertisers.
Running on a side by side track is the story of Ben, a young boy who goes down a huge stream
of misinformation on social media that gradually changes his entire political viewpoint. His
family members touch upon the other effects of social media. His mother is struggling to lessen
her own and her family’s time spent using technology, while elder sister Cassandra tries to save
her brother from falling into the trap of online propaganda.

Who is your favorite character and why ?

My favorite character in the documentary is Vincent Kartheiser. He plays the role of the A.I
system present inside Skyler’s phone. It shows that now the the A.I is so advanced that even the
developers do not completely understand it. A perfect simulation of the internet’s extraction
model is showed via his character in the docu-drama. He has a triple role where he plays the
three most important AI chracters- Engagtement, Growth and Advertising. They all worked
together at a control panel to make sure that Ben’s attention is drawn away from the physical
world and he falls into the virtual world. There are many tools used to make sure that he falls
into this rabbit hole. The AI creates a virtual image of how Ben should look like and how his
behaviour would be. This character is my personal favourite because it shows hoe all of us are
actually facing the same issue by the AI present in our phones. The character shows us how the
software works to attract us to look into our electronic devices by giving us pop-ups and
notifications we want to see based on our data and behaviour on these social media websites. It
shows how much we are glued to the virtual world and how much our data is being analysed to
make content available to make sure we fall more and more deeper into the digital world.

Did you like the movie? Why or why not?

Personally I found the movie very informative and educated. Some of the things mentined in the
movie I had read about, but it threw light upon a lot of facts that I had no idea about. The movie
uncovers the ugly truth behind our screens and how much we are engrossed in it. The movie
gives everyone an insight into the dirty game of social media where the users are sold to the
highest bidder for the benfit of the company and the advertiser. It gives us information of how
our data is being used to give us content we want, and we are being sold to people want an
audience like us. The movie had a family to show us how we are drawn into the world of social
media, how it affects our thought process and political viewpoints and most importantly how
difficult it is for us to stay away from the screens of our mobile phones.

The most defining and eye-opening dialogue in the movie:

“If your not praying for the product, you are the product.”

Give an outline for a sequel to the movie

If a second part for this movie comes out, it should be divided into two parts. The first part
should talk about how terrorism is being promoted via social media platforms and how people,
mainly of younger age are being influenced in following certain groups on these social media
platform and get brainwashed by their beliefs and ideologies. It should mention how these
radical groups use social media platforms to get their funding from various sources by hook or
by crook. The same format should follow where there is a sample family and how they are being
affected by these methods on social media platforms. It should talk about how terrorism has been
able to spread worldwide and national secrets are shared and sold on chatrooms and groups made
on popular platforms. The second half should talk about religion and how social media platforms
are being used by religious communities to gather more and more followers. Not only this, but It
should also talk about the hate spread online by one religious community about another
community and how minorities are being targeted on these plaforms.
