Running head: REFLECTION #2

Module 4-6 Reflection

Designing to me is the creation and modification of the lesson and planning is how it will

be carried out. In designing a lesson plan, it is important for students to feel connected to what I

will be teaching, and a way for educators to do that is to simply get to know their students

outside of what they know about them based on scores and grades. This is especially important

now in a time in which students and teachers are not making an in-person connection. Module

four has taught me the usefulness and importance of having a survey filled out by students prior

to the beginning of the year. In making my survey, I tried to formulate questions that will let me

know what my students are motivated by and what are their specific needs; whether it is

technology, academic help, or anything else they wished for me to know. In my initial survey, I

asked students to share their favorite quotes and their favorite person. Many of those who filled

out the survey wrote empowering and motivating quotes by people who they identify with. One

individual wrote in a saying by their parents and wrote them in as the person who motivates them

most. I would like to replicate these types of questions once I have my classroom and incorporate

my students’ answers into the school day. For example, opening up the class or having one of the

quotes they wrote in somewhere in my classroom. I had the opportunity to create another survey

and have it filled out by the students I will be tutoring the rest of the semester. It gave me an idea

of the type of person this student is and even who I can ask for tips because they mentioned a

teacher at my internship site as their favorite teacher!

Content and language objectives enhanced what we learned in the past weeks with

content and disciplinary literacy. I feel like we were able to practice designing objectives easier

because we know the differences between the two different types of literacies. What was new to

me was learning about the language objectives. Basically, it is explaining what language skills
students are using to complete the content objective (Kumar, 2019). This can activate different

types of expressive language and allows us to be flexible with how the student will interact with

the content concepts. The way I planned before, I chose activities because they seemed like a fun

way to motivate and engage students, but now I have a much deeper understanding of the

learning processes happening as the students complete the activity. What has really helped me

better understand how to fulfill the objectives I create is BDA framework. This framework

makes it feasible for educators to insert meaningful learning strategies and different types of

formative assessments.
