Biomedical Technology

People’s medical and social needs, in modern society, are increasing on daily basis, in a way
that modern medicine seems to be incapacitated facing this complexity. Thus, the
multidisciplinary work between engineers and doctors has become a necessity. Making,
therefore, the progress in biomedical engineering and robotics a crucial medical need.
Biomedical technology ranges from the use of simple machines such as microscopes
,wheelchairs to ease the movement of handicapped people, to the use of highly advanced
machines like surgical robots and life-support machines.

I believe that the continues use of technology, especially the robotics and computer fields,
will keep impacting positively the healthcare industry. For instance, computers have enabled
efficient storage of medical information. If this technology keeps developing, we will get in no
time a medical cart for each patient that contains all his medical history, and can be used
worldwide. Robotic surgery is also an innovation that allows the surgeons, especially
neurosurgeons, to perform easily and safely all kinds of complex procedures with more
flexibility and precision that are not possible with traditional surgical techniques. Robotic
surgery is minimally invasive and uses special techniques, including a small video camera that
provides magnified 3D images of the surgical field and the human body. Same applies for
artificial mechanical extremities (mechanical legs and hands) that allow people suffering from a
physical handicap to restore a regular life and to be active again in the society and to overcome
their incapacity.

In conclusion, the interaction between biomedical engineering and medicine has greatly
helped modern society and increased the quality of healthcare services on different levels:
prevention, treatment and palliative care. If biomedical technology keeps developing it is much
likely in the upcoming 20 years to replace the human
medicine.
