Demography is a systematic study of the human population. Demography studies

the composition, size, and distribution of the human population at a specific time. It also
studies the changes occurring in population size and composition throughout the years,
and it also studies the components of these changes, such as fertility, mortality, and
migration. Aside from this, demography also studies the factors affecting these
components and the consequences of population size, distribution, and composition. A
population’s composition may be described in terms of basic demographic features
such as age, sex, family, status, education, occupation, ethnicity, religion, income, and
wealth.

Overpopulation is deemed as one of the significant problems the human race is facing.
According to the video, approximately 7.6 Billion people live on Earth, and most likely,
another billion will be added by 2030. Africa, Asia, India, China, and Nigeria are some of
the overpopulated countries. Unfortunately, the population is booming because more
people are being born, and fewer people are dying. The growth of the human race has
placed a massive burden on the planet.

Overpopulation has many advantages and disadvantages. A significant

disadvantage of overpopulation is poverty. Overpopulation means having more mouths
to feed, a lower standard of living, overcrowded cities, unemployment, malnutrition, and
inadequate housing facilities. Aside from this, overpopulation also results in a higher
crime rate, high birth rate, low life expectancy, and child labor. Overpopulation also
hurts our environment because trees are cut to make housing facilities and insufficient
natural resources. On the other hand, some advantages of overpopulation are an
increase in demand will be generated, Availability of human resources and help in
economic development, and having cheaper and readily available products.

As a student, I think the best way to lessen the ever-increasing number of

populations in the Philippines is by studying and educating myself to educate others. As
a student, I can help educate people, especially women on contraceptives, and how it
will benefit them in the long run. Also, an action I can do is by being informed —
informed of the consequences of overpopulation and how to reduce it to influence
people around me to be aware and to be responsible citizens of the Philippines.
