Lesson objectives:
To notice the difference in register between phrasal verbs and their equivalents
To ask and answer questions in a familiar context using phrasal verbs
To discover the meaning of phrasal verbs from the context
To use phrasal verbs in sentences of their own

ACTIVITY 1: Warm-up Interaction Timing


Aim: to fill in the lyrics of a song with the correct missing phrasal verbs.
Procedure: T → Ss 7 min.
The teacher asks the students to work in pairs, listen to part of a song Ss → T
(Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson) and fill in the lyrics with the missing
phrasal verbs.
ACTIVITY 2
Aims: to notice the difference in register between phrasal verbs and their T → Ss 15 min.
equivalents and to ask and answer questions in a familiar context using Ss → T

Procedure:
1. The students are instructed work individually, read two conversations
and notice which one sounds more natural.
2. Next, the students are asked to use the phrasal verbs from conversation
B in five questions. They ask and answer the questions in pairs, then they
report their answers to the class.
ACTIVITY 3
Aim: To discover the meaning of phrasal verbs from the context and use
them in sentences of their own T → Ss 15 min.
Procedure: Ss →Ss
1. The teacher has the students work in pairs, read ten sentences Ss → T
containing phrasal verbs and find clues which could help them guess the
meaning of target vocabulary.
2. The students are also asked to match the phrasal verbs to their
meanings and use the multi-word verbs in sentences of their own.
ACTIVITY 4 T → Ss 10 min.
Procedure: to reinforce phrasal verbs Ss → T
The students walk around the classroom and ask questions containing the Ss →Ss
phrasal verbs which have been discussed during the lesson. They cannot
have the same name written down more than twice during this activity.
The teacher does feedback on the exercise, asking what the students
discovered about each other.
