Philippine Literature Period

Early Times – 1564


This is the first ever period of the Philippine literary history.
Here we learn about riddles,proverbs,legends,epics,”tanaga” and many more.

Spanish – 1565-1863
Spanish occupied Philippines in early 15th century.
Two distinct classifications-religious and secular
Religious Literature – religious lyrics written by Ladino poets
Secular Literature – non-religious literature
Spanish Colonization Period also has oral and written literature.

Oral literature – songs,religious,written literature


Songs- a composition for voice and voices performed by singing.
Religious Drama – setting forth events recorded in the Bible.
Drama – enacted in front of live audiences.
Written Literature – short stories and poetry
Short stories – a brief work of literature
Poetry – an imaginative awareness of experience express through meaning,sound
And rhythmic language.

1838 – Florante and Laura – about the love and determination


NOTABLE FILIPINOS DURING THE SPANISH COLONIZATION PERIOD IN
THE PHILIPPINE LITERATURE
Jose Dela Cruz (1746-1829) – he was the foremost exponent of the comedia
during that time.
Franciso Baltazar (1788-1862) – known as Master of traditional Tagalog poetry.

NATIONALISTIC/PROPAGANDA AND REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD


(1864-1896)
Forms of literary under this period includes literature and revolutionary literature.
Propaganda Literature – reformatory in objective
A. Political Essays examples are Diariong Tagalog and La Solidaridad
B. Political Novels examples are Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
Revolutionary Literature – more propagandistic than literary
A. Political Essays – helped inflamed the spirit of revolution
