1) INTRODUCTION & DESCRIPTION

The Millennium Medical Products Ltd(MMPL) Tail-Pipe Cylinder Connector are

manufactured in accordance with BS EN ISO 21969:2009.
The Tail-Pipes are gas specific and are designed and intended to be used for
connecting single cylinders to header racks for use on manifold systems.
The Tail-pipes are manufactured with either a Medical Pin Index Yoke or Bull Nose
Connector, and also the Nitrous Oxide Medical Connection, for connecting to the
cylinder. Where the Tail-Pipe connects to the Manifold Header Rack the threads are
gas specific.
The nominal inlet pressure of an MMPL Tail-Pipe is 230Bar.

2) LIFETIME

MMPL’s Tail-Pipe Cylinder Connector’s have a lifetime of 5 years from the factory
test date, which is recorded on the label attached to the Tail-Pipe.

3) SAFETY.
• Care should be taken when drawing conclusions about the contents of
cylinders from their pressures. In the case of compressed gases such as
oxygen and medical air, the cylinder pressure is a good indication of the
cylinder contents – for example, if the cylinder is half full it will show only half
pressure. Liquefied gases such as nitrous oxide, however, show a full
cylinder pressure as long as there is liquid in the cylinder. This may represent a
very small percentage of the full cylinder contents. It should not be assumed
that a cylinder of nitrous oxide is full simply because the gauge shows full
pressure.
• Persons undertaking installation or maintenance must be trained to undertake
specialist work of this nature.
• Wherever specified, the permit to work system should always be adhered to for
all installations once commissioned.
• It is essential that the Tail-Pipes should be installed in accordance with
HTM 02-01/HTM 2022/ C11.
• Oil, grease, jointing compounds and combustible materials must not be allowed
to contact any part of the Tail-Pipe or Manifold, due to the danger of fire or
explosion.
• NO SMOKING OR NAKED LIGHTS in or near the Manifold area.
• This Tail-Pipe is a high pressure connector and must not be replaced with one
of lower nominal inlet pressure.

4) STORAGE

All products are separately packaged, clean for Medical use and should be stored
under controlled conditions.

5) ENVIROMENT CONDITIONS

MMPL’s Tail-Pipes can be safely handled and stored under normal working and
environmental conditions. Adverse environmental conditions and harsh abrasives or
chemicals may cause damage.

6) CLEANING

The use of abrasive or solvent based cleaning solutions is not recommended.

We recommend the use of a damp cloth or mild soap solution for external cleaning.
Do not use any phenol or halogen based disinfectants or agents that release chlorine
or oxygen. Do not allow a build up of dirt or dust around the cylinder connections.

7) INITIAL INSTALLATION.

1. Unpack the Tail-Pipes.

2. Check O rings and Bowdoc seals are present and ensure ends are free
of particles. before installing.
3. Using the appropriate spanner fix the header end of the Tail-Pipe to the
header block and tighten.
4. Ensuring the Tail-Pipe is in the correct configuration (see examples
below) fix the Tail-Pipe to the Cylinder using the appropriate
spanner/hand and the Tail-Pipe Torsion bar when fitted and tighten.
5. The connections must then be checked for leaks. Making sure the
cylinder valve is opened slowly due to the danger of fire or explosion
arising from pressure shocks.
6. When installation is complete the installation date is to be written on the
Tail-Pipe label.

8) INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE.

1. MMPL recommends that inspection of the Tail-pipe and seals

is carried out at every bottle change, as is any resulting maintenance.
2. When changing a Tail-pipe, you should ensure the cylinder valve is
closed. As there is significant danger in disconnecting a Tail-pipe which
is still connected to a pressure source.

3. Slowly disconnect the Tail-pipe from the cylinder using the appropriate
spanner/hand as there may still be a small amount of gas left in the
tailpipe.
4. Disconnect the header rack end of the Tail-pipe.
5. Visually check the condition of the Tail-pipe and seals.
6. Order replacement parts when necessary.
7. Re connect Tail-pipe following the guideline in Section 7 Initial
Installation
