1. Land pollution
a. Agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides to maximize
yields. These inputs are loaded with chemicals that strips the minerals of soils
and are harmful to animals.
b. Deforestation. Elimination of natural vegetation disrupts the ecosystem,
adversely affecting various life forms. It exposes the earth’s surface to sun’s
intense heat which in turn leads to soil degradation and desertification.
c. Mining degrades the quality of land. These include the extraction of metals,
oil, coal, stones, stand, and mineral ores such as gold. When mining or
quarrying, you normally have to clear the land surface and drill huge manholes
and pits. After mining, we leave the land completely defaced and exposed to
erosion, which further whittles down its quality and value.
d. Non-biodegradable solid waste includes metal, glass, and plastic products.
This waste finds its way to the dumping areas, which in turn results in
landfills. Plastic products are especially the most notorious.
2. Air pollution
a. Pollutant such as Nitrogen Oxides(NOx), Carbon Monoxide(CO), Sulfur
Dioxide(SO2) emitted by vehicles causes adverse impacts on environment.
Primary pollution is emitted directly into the atmosphere; secondary pollution
results from chemical reactions between pollutants in the atmosphere.
b. Factory emissions. The most damaging greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, is
released into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. Factory
emissions contribute greatly to the release of carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere. It also causes ozone depletion.
