ABSTRACT

Our world is drastically changing. Temperatures are rising, skies over cities are blanked with
smoke, and melted glaciers are raising sea levels at alarming rates. Although the destruction
we face is already threatening the quality of life for billions around the world, it could just be
the beginning. India being a peninsular country surrounded by Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean
and Bay of Bengal is quite prone to floods. As per GIS major flood prone areas of India cover
almost 12.5% area of country. Bihar is India’s most flood-prone state, with 76% of
population in the North Bihar living under the recurring threat of flood devastation. Kosi
river is one the rivers in Bihar that causes major flood destruction. Kosi, with it seven
tributaries known as Saptkosi, drains the eastern part of Nepal and parts of Tibet. Since kosi
is too dynamic, the course gets changed almost every five years and because of this the
house gets damaged and people have to relocate and rebuild their houses every couple of
years. This project explores a sustainable architectural intervention of providing a flood
resistant slum development which will be a long-term solution with better standards of
living for the people within the current and projected flood prone areas.
