(Chemical Engineering)

Date: 16-11-2019 Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70

1. Answer ONE Question from each UNIT
2. All parts of a Question must be answered in one place to get valued.
3. All questions carry equal marks.

UNIT-I
1. a) Write short notes on non-ideal reactors, micro fluid and macro fluid 6 Marks

b) Dispersed noncoalescing droplets (CA0=2 mol/liter) react ( → ,
 , 0 .5 8 Marks
liter/mol.min) as they pass through a contactor. Find the average concentration of A remaining
in the droplets leaving the contactor if their RTD is given by the following curve

2. Discuss in detail with graphs on diagnosing reactor Ills 14 Marks

UNIT-II

3. a) An injected slug of tracer material flows with its carrier fluid down a long, straight pipe in 8 Marks
dispersed plug flow. At point A in the pipe the spread of tracer is 16 m. At point B, 1kilometer
downstream from A, its spread is 32 m. What do you estimate its spread to be at a point C,
which is 2 kilometers downstream from point A?
b) What is dispersion model and tanks-in-series model. What are its applications 6 Marks

4. Discuss on the following:

a) Mixing of two miscible fluids 8 Marks
b) Product distribution in multiple reaction 6 Marks

UNIT-III
5. a) What is a catalyst? Explain its role in a chemical reaction with suitable examples. 7 Marks
b) Describe about the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic processes. 7 Marks

6. What are the experimental methods available for finding rates 14 Marks

UNIT-IV
7. a) Define fouling, regeneration, poisoning and reactivation 4 Marks
b) Discuss on the mechanisms of catalyst deactivation 10 Marks

8. Determine the rate for independent deactivation for

a) Batch solids, mixed constant flow of fluids 7 Marks
b) Batch solids, mixed changing flow of fluid (to keep CA fixed) 7 Marks

UNIT-V
9. a) Write short notes on progressive conversion model and shrinking core model 4 Marks
b) Derive the time-conversion-radius relationship for shrinking-core model for spherical 10 Marks
particles of unchanging size when diffusion through gas film controls.

10. Uniform-sized spherical particles UO3 are reduced to UO2 in a uniform environment with the 14 Marks
following results:

t, hr 0.180 0.347 0.453 0.567 0.733

XB 0.45 0.68 0.8 0.95 0.98

equation to represent this reduction
