The Window and the Mirror

 Wurtzel reason for good to great transformation
Alan L. Wurtzel, the Level 5 leader responsible for turning Circuit City from a
company that was into ruins and on the edge of bankruptcy into one of America’s
most successful electronics retailer. He was asked the reason behind
transforming his company his answer was “LUCK”. He never took credit on his
own rather he said it was all because of proper time. place and right successor

 Level 5 leaders called it “luck”

The Executive at steel company Nucor was asked what made him take such
good decisions, His response was “I guess we were just lucky.” Joseph F.
Cullman III, the Level 5 CEO of Philip Morris, refused to take any credit for his
success and said it’s because of his good fortune to have great colleagues,
successors, and predecessors and even his book was titled “I am a lucky guy”

 Bethlehem Steel and Nucor’s view on environment

These two companies were operating in the same environment with similar products
and was facing threats because of imported steel ,but the both CEO’s had a different
view on the situation .Bethlehem steel blamed the imports as their reason for all
problems .Meanwhile Nucor and his team considered them as lucky because
importer had to ship the heavy steel and problem they saw was with the
management and not imports

 Window and mirror concept

Good-to-great leaders will “look out the window” when assigning credit for their
successes to external factors such collegues, timing ,luck and “look in the mirror
“when taking up responsibility and if anything goes wrong, whereas other leaders
/executives will “look out the window” and blame other for bad events “look in
the mirror” for taking credits on their own . This is an important aspect of Jim
Collins’s “Level 5 Leadership.”

This concept does not reflect reality. Even though the level 5 leaders are the
reason for the transformation they are never ready to claim the credit and admit
it.

Born Or Bred?
 Level 5 leaders are essential!
Once a lady asked Collins can she make her company great without being
level 5 leader? Collins replied out of 1,435 companies only 11 where selected
for study and all of them had level 5 leaders at key positions though it is not
the only element required but the essential one

 a “Can you learn to become Level 5?

The lady asked the above question, Collins admits that the traits that epitomize a
Level five leader, like humility and ambition for the group, may be difficult to cultivate,
as they’re a product of a particular person’s upbringing, life and work experience,
and personality. Also, because his research focused on what it takes for a good
company to become a great one—rather than what life experiences result in a Level
5 leader—he lacks the hard data to back up any suggestions.

 Categories of level 5 leader

1) People those who don’t have the seed in them and those who do :
Work will always be first and foremost and not – fame, fortune, power, , etc. z
Work will never be about what they build, create and contribute. The
motivation and personal ambition that often drives people to become a Level
4 leader, due to lack of humility required prevents them from rising to Level 5
A very few companies transform from good to great cause wrong people are
put in level 5 position
2)People who can evolve
These are the ones that who have the capability within them, ignored but can
be evolved because of right experience, loving parents or mentors
Eg: Darwin bloomed into level 5 after he met with cancer
Joe cullman survial after world war II experience he considered his life as gift
he had got back
Colman Mockler converted to Christianity and took his religious beliefs to
corporate life

 A key component inside the black box

Level 5 is a key component inside black box that transforms good to great but
inside that constitutes inner development about which we can only speculate
 Good to great principles
If a person has the seed in them, they can use the good to great principle we
discovered to nurture and grow as level 5 leader but again there is no guarantee
but they can definitely try.

 “Can level 5 leaders be developed?”

We cannot say for sure what percentage of people have the seed within, nor
how many of those can nurture it enough to become Level 5. Even the
research team has no idea how many of them will grow to be level 5 but
definitely the idea had inspired them and is worth trying to be one!!
