Composition: The University Curriculum Committee shall be comprised of two faculty
members from each college, elected from their College Curriculum Committee. The two members from a college must be from different departments, and the Faculty Senate will select one representative to serve on the committee. The chairperson of the committee will be the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, appointed by the AVP for Curriculum, Assessment and Faculty Affairs. The chairperson is a non-voting member except in the event of a tie. Additional non-voting ex-officio members include: Academic Advising, Ex-Officio; Manager of University Catalog and Curriculum, Ex-Officio; and Secretary, Ex-Officio. (When an academic department has curriculum items being considered they are encouraged to send a non-voting guest to the meeting to provide additional information to the committee if needed). Specific duties of the UCC are as follows: • Develop criteria and procedures to evaluate proposed courses and curricula in terms of the contributions to the objectives of the University and the needs of the state; • Apply these criteria and procedures to all proposed courses and curricula and forward the results of its action to the Academic Council; • Periodically examine existing courses and curricula as to the contributions to the objectives of the University and the needs of the state and recommend indicated changes to the appropriate departments; • Study courses and curricula in light of legislative and Coordinating Board directives concerning small classes, interdisciplinary programs and the objectives of the institution; • Evaluate the effectiveness of the University core curriculum and for recommending courses that meet core curriculum requirements; • Review, approve/disapprove special program requests for exceptions to core curriculum; • Review, approve/disapprove all undergraduate curriculum items, and recommend indicated changes to the departments; and, • Evaluate courses/programs for consistency with the mission/goals of the University and the Office of Academic Affairs In addition, the UCC follows criteria and procedures to evaluate proposed courses and curricula in terms of their contributions to the objectives of the university and the needs of the state. The evaluations of program curriculum and faculty oversight are available in SACSCOC Comprehensive Standard 10.4. The delineation of responsibilities in 10.4 fully assures that program curriculum is appropriate for all constituents of the university. Deliberations of departmental faculty consider items within their discipline to evaluate the needs of the program and provide the most current curriculum for Tarleton students.
