Homework 5
Horizontal and Vertical Curves

1- Use Wolfpack to compute the values required to layout the horizontal and vertical
curve of project 2. Include a copy of the printout, and keep one copy for field
work in project 2.

2- a. What is the degree of curvature of the following horizontal curves if the value
of R is: 7750, 1000, or 3500 ft.

b. Similar to 24-4, using D = 3 40’, I = 2420’, and PI station = 50 + 62.48

c. Similar to 24-7, using D = 3 10’, I = 3230’, and PI station = 29 + 64.20 ft. Use the
deflection angle method.

3- Why is a parabola rather than a circular arc used for vertical curves on grade lines
used for vehicular travel?

4- Field conditions require a highway curve to pass through a fixed point. Compute a
suitable equal-tangent vertical curve and full station elevations if g1 = -3.5%, g2 =
+0.5%, VPI elevation 870 ft at station 55 + 00. fixed elevation 872.75 ft at station
55+ 00.

5- What is the minimum length of a vertical curve to provide 402 m sight distance if it
connects the grades +0.73 and – 1.20. Use the equations given in the lectures, and not the
ones in the book.

6- Tabulate station elevations for an equal tangent parabolic vertical curve where a + 2.50%
grade meets a – 1.75% grade at station 44 + 25 and elevation 368.96 ft, 800 ft curve.
Stakeout at half stations. Determine the elevation and station of the high point of the
curve
