Lesson Planning

Name of the lesson: Cops and Writers

Grade Level: Grade 2

Group Size: Small Groups

Subject: English Language Arts/Reading

Standard: (2)7.4 identify complete and incomplete sentences in writing [NS/PS 7.2.2]

Objective: Students will be able to work together to distinguish complete sentences from

incomplete sentences and will be able to show their understanding in a Word processed

document.

Materials:

o 4 Hats

-Each hat should contain 6 slips of paper. 2 of them must be labeled “detective,” 2 of

them must be labeled “incomplete sentence writer,” and 2 of them must be labeled

“complete sentence writer.”

o 8 Magnifying Glasses
o 4 Rolls of Streamers

o 4 Pre-made “Jail” Areas in the Corners of the Room

o 4 Computers with a blank Word Document Already on the Screen

o Timer

Procedures:

1.) Explain the process of “Cops and Robbers” to the students.

a. Ex: There are people who play like they are cops and they chase people who play

like they are robbers until all of the robbers are caught.

2.) Explain the process of the class activity “Cops and Writers.”

a. Students who are assigned to be incomplete sentence writers will write a sentence

about what they did after school the day before, but they must leave it unfinished.

b. Students who are assigned to be complete sentence writers will write a complete,

finished sentence about what they did after school the day before.

c. Students who are assigned to be detectives will be using their magnifying glasses

to look through the written sentences. They will have to find the

innocent—complete sentence writers and also the guilty—incomplete sentence

writers. Detectives must tie the hands of guilty writers with the roll of streamers

and sit them down behind the jail.

3.) Explain the 1st set of Directions.

i. Break students off into groups of 6. That should leave 4 groups, with a

total of 24 students in the class. Move each group to the four corners of the

room, next to a jail area.

ii. Have the students in each group pull from a hat. There are 4 hats for each

of the 4 groups. *Make sure writers don’t reveal what role they will play*

iii. Have the detectives in each group grab a magnifying glass and ONE roll

of streamers for their entire group.

iv. Give all of the writers 2 minutes to write their sentences.

v. Let everyone know that the detectives must find the writers who are guilty

and put them in jail. Anyone deemed an innocent writer is free, but must

stay with their group.

vi. Begin the PROMPT down below.

4.) Explain the Prompt.

Teacher tells the class: “Hi everyone! It’s your boss, detective Huglin, and I just received

some bad, bad news from the Bureau. There are writers on the loose who aren’t giving

people the truth. *gasp* They leave their writing unfinished so all of the readers are

confused! We want the truth and we need to crack this case wide open! Find the

incomplete writers, handcuff them, and throw them in jail. You have 10 minutes to get it

under control and report back to me once you finish. If you have any problems, you let

me know. Begin.” *Set a timer for 10 minutes*

5.) Evaluate the Accuracy of Students.

a. Once the 10 minute period is over, walk around to the 4 groups. Look for

mistakes and share your findings with the entire class. Ex: If one group mistook

an incomplete sentence for a complete sentence, explain why it was an incomplete

sentence to the entire class.

6.) Explain the 2nd Set of Directions.

i. After looking through everyone’s groups, assign each group to one of the

four readily prepared computers.

ii. Have the group type each of their names at the top of the document.

iii. Direct the entire group to come up with and type 3 incomplete sentences

about what they did in the activity and 3 complete sentences about what

they liked or disliked about the activity.

iv. Have students “share” the document with yourself. Help any group that is

struggling.

Assessment: Students will be assessed by the sentences their group typed into the Word

document. If they effectively built 3 incomplete sentences and 3 complete sentences as a whole,

then 6 points will be awarded to everyone. One point is deducted for every incorrect answer.

There will be no deduction of points based on grammar, spelling, or technical issues.
