    A tsunami is a series of huge waves caused by an underwater disturbance like an earthquake or volcanic eruption. The waves can travel across the open sea up to 450 miles per hour. As they reach shallow coastal waters, they grow enormously in height and crash violently onto shore. Tsunamis can have wave heights over 100 feet and cause extensive destruction when they hit land. They are sometimes mistakenly called tidal waves, but tsunamis are not related to tides.
