GRAMMAR

Lost and Found in China

哪儿有提款机 ?
"Where is an ATM?"

Our grammar focus today is on the sentence pattern 哪儿有, nǎr yǒu ("where is"). Use this
this pattern to ask where things or places are. This sentence pattern is tremendously easy to
use. Simply follow it with any noun or place. In our dialogue, for instance, we heard our first
speaker ask 哪儿有取款机, nǎr yǒu qǔ kuǎn jī ("Where is an ATM?"). They could have used
this same structure to ask for anything else as well, as in the following examples.

For Example:

1. 哪儿有洗手间?
Nǎr yǒu xǐshǒujiān?
"Where is a washroom?"

3. 哪儿有商场?

"Where is a shopping center?"

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Withdrawing Money in China

It used to be a challenge withdrawing cash from foreign bank accounts. These days there are
ATMs everywhere, most of which support credit card withdrawals. Because there is a limit on
the cash withdrawal limit through ATMs, if you need to withdraw more than 2,500 RMB per
day, you will need to head to the Bank of China, which can arrange larger withdrawals
through manual transactions.
