Day 4
Learning Competency:
Employ analytical listening in problem solving.
Background Information for Learners:
Listening is crucial in establishing effective communication. The failure to correctly deliver and/or receive the
message between the receiver and speaker results to miscommunication. This is absolutely true in a real setting: if
concerned parties have miscommunication, problems of conflict will likely to arise.
The accompanying activity in this lesson will make you appreciate the importance of using analytical listening as
one of the great tools that we could use to solving problems.

Read and Listen: The song “Common Ground” by Kodaline

Source: Celebrating Diversity through World Literature
English Learner’s Material page 118

Task 9. Getting into the Song

In the title and throughout its lyrics, the song mentioned many times the term “common ground.” In the art of
communication, common ground refers to an area where opinions or interests shared by two or more parties lie. In
other words, this is where you can find similar aspects between two (or more) entities with differences. You may refer
this concept in Task 2 of this SLA which you are supposed to have answered in Day 1.

For today’s activity, analyse and answer the questions below.

1. How did you feel while listening to the song?

2. Going over through the lyrics, what piece/s of advice you think you can get from the song?
3. Do you agree or disagree with the advice given in the song? Why/why not?
4. Recall events in your life when you were in conflict with people (including family, friends, classmates, or
strangers). How were you able to use communication, particularly listening, in resolving your differences?
