READING INTERVENTION LESSON PLAN

STUDENT/PSEUDONYM: Anna (8th grade)

DATE: 11/3/2020

GOAL: Goal 1 (Comprehension): When given a passage, Anna will read and correctly

answer explicit comprehension questions.

RATIONALE: This student struggles with comprehension. More specifically, she

struggles with answering explicit comprehension questions. Because of this, I

decided to use the Text Lookback strategy to teach the student how to identify

explicit/lookback questions and return to the text to find the correct answer. I

chose to implement this strategy with a non-fiction NewsELA article that the

student was assigned in her reading class. By doing this, I feel like it will help the

student to better comprehend the text and answer explicit comprehension

questions.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE CORE STANDARD(S):

- Standard - CC.1.2.8.L: Read and comprehend literary non-fiction and

informational text on grade level, reading independently and proficiently.

STEPS OF EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION:

* Materials:
- NewsELA article “Who Formally Declares the Winner of the U.S.

Presidential Election?”

1. Introduce the article “Who Formally Declares the Winner of the U.S.

Presidential Election?”

2. The student will read the article out loud.

3. I will give the student the comprehension questions that go along with the

article.

4. Introduce the strategy: Text Lookback-

ehension/text-lookback

a. Explain the difference between lookback questions and think

questions.

i. Lookback questions- the answer can be found directly in the

text. These questions use words from the article or give clues

to where the answer can be found (titles, headings).

ii. Think questions- The answer to these questions are based on

your own opinion.

5. Use a think aloud to model identifying lookback questions and skimming the

article to find the section that contains the correct answer.

a. Read the first comprehension question.

b. Identify whether it is a lookback or think question.

c. Identify any clues in the question indicating what section the answer

can be found in.

d. Model skimming the article by looking at titles and headings to find

the correct section and answer.

6. Guided practice: I will assist the student in using the Text Lookback

strategy to answer the rest of the comprehension questions. I will help her

to identify the type of question, find clues (headings, words from the text,

etc.), and skim the article in order to find the correct answer to each

question.

ASSESSMENT:

- I will collect the student’s answers to the comprehension questions to

determine whether the student was able to look back in the text to find the

correct answer to explicit questions.

REFLECTION:

- I feel like this intervention lesson went really well. It was in the context of

a passage that the student had to read for class, which I feel was beneficial.

Every week, the students have to read a new NewsELA article and answer
questions, so I feel like the student can apply this Text Lookback strategy

to help her read and comprehend future articles. The student did a great

job identifying look back questions and skimming the article to find the

correct heading/section where the answer could be found. I also feel like I

did well in guiding her through this process by thinking aloud. However one

thing that I need to improve is my confidence. I always get nervous teaching

lessons and worry that I’m going to forget to do something or that things

won’t go exactly how I planned. I want to become more confident in my

teaching and learn to be more flexible. Besides this, I feel like this

intervention went really well.

*Work sample must follow the intervention lesson plan*
