OBJECTIVES

1. To compare between the theoretical and practical/simulation of amplifier voltage gain.

2. To determine the effect of the load on the amplifier voltage gain.
3. To draw the AC load line.
4. To observe the effect of unbypassed emitter resistors.

INTRODUCTION

In this lab, the common-emitter configuration will be investigated. This

commonemitter amplifier typically uses a self-biasing scheme and has a relatively linear
output. The common-emitter amplifier is characterized by high voltage (Av) and current gain
(Ai).The amplifier typically has a relatively high input resistance (1 to 10k ohms) and is
generally used to drive medium to high resistance loads. The circuit for the common-emitter
can be seen in Figure 1. It is used in applications where a small voltage signal needs to be

amplified to a large voltage signal. Since the amplifier cannot drive low resistance loads, it is
usually cascaded with a buffer that can acts as a driver.

PROCEDURE

i. Construct the BJT circuit designed in Figure 2 in Multisim software.

ii. Calibrate/Adjust the oscilloscope in Multisim simulation. iii. Connect the input of the
amplifier, through a coupling capacitor CC1 (2.2 µF) to a signal generator/AC source
power. Set the signal generator/AC source power output (V IN) to 0.1V peak-peak at 1 kHz.
iv. Sketch and label the input and output signal for the case in TABLE 2. v.
Sketch and label the AC load line based on the experimental results.

DISCUSSION

i) What is the voltage gain for each case? Do they match the theoretical
values?

Yes, Except for CE in Circuit and CE || RE2

CE removed = (Calculation: -0.67, Measured: -0.67)
CE in circuit = (Calculation: -105.405, Measured: -58.35)
CE || RE2 = (Calculation: -11.57, Measured: -11.56)

ii) What is the phase relationship of the input and output voltage of
common emitter amplifier?

The common emitter transistor amplifier is the only configuration

that gives an inversion, 180°, between the input and output
signals.

iii) State the function of input and output coupling capacitor, CC1 & CC2.

They were used to prevent the interference of a transistor's bias

voltage by AC signals. In most of the amplifier circuits, this is
achieved by driving the signal to the base terminal of a transistor
through a coupling capacitor.

CONCLUSION

Make your overall conclusion by referring to the objective of this experiment (your
answer should be in simple notes).

• Throughout this simulation, I was able to compare the theoretical value with the
simulation measured results and able to see the difference of the amplifier voltage
gain.
• The effect of the load was observed in the simulation, It has been concluded that the
more the load the lower the voltage gain on the circuit. This was tested by changing
the load using the bypass at the emitter resistors.
