The Expanded Program on
Immunization was launched in July
1976 by the Department of health in
cooperation with the World Health
Organization and the UNICEF.

COVERAGE VACCINE
The Expanded Program on Immunization
(EPI) was established in 1976 to ensure that
infants/children and mothers have access to
routinely recommended infant/childhood
vaccines. Six vaccine-preventable diseases
were initially included in the EPI: tuberculosis,
poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis
and measles.
Over-all Goal:
To reduce the morbidity and mortality among
children against the most common vaccine-
preventable diseases.
Specific Goals:
1. To immunize all infants/children against
the most common vaccine-preventable
diseases.
2. To sustain the polio-free status of the
Philippines.
3. To eliminate measles infection.
4. To eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus
5. To control diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis b
and German measles.
6. To prevent extra pulmonary tuberculosis
among children.
DOSAGE SCHEDULED DOSES
Initial dose given at birth or
BCG Vaccine - any time after birth (0-1 year).
Bacille Initial dose 0.05 mL ID R/L
deltoid. Booster dose at school
Calmette-
Guerin, is a entry (Grade 1) 0.1 mL ID R/L Birth or any time after birth
vaccine for deltoid given to all grade
tuberculosis school pupils regardless of the
(TB) disease. presence or absence of BCG
scar.
DPT Vaccine 3 doses given as early as 6
– Diphtheria, 3 doses – 0.5 mL IM at deltoid, weeks after birth with at least
pertussis, vastus lateralis, gluteus 4 weeks interval in between
tetanus doses
3 doses given as early as 6
OPV Vaccine
3 doses – 2 to 3 drops by weeks after birth with at least
