    2.6. GRAMMAR: REPORTED SPEECH


    Reported speech (or indirect speech) refers to the act of reporting something that was said, but not using exactly the same words. Pay attention to the example below:

    There are many other verbs you can use besides said when reporting a sentence. For example: admitted, asked, begged, complained, denied, invited, offered, promised, replied,
    suggested, told.

    As a rule, when you report something someone has said you go back a tense. Check the table:

    Some modal verbs also change:

    If the reported sentence contains an expression of time, you must change it as well:
     

    Pay attention now to the following three examples. They show you the changes you have to make when reporting a statement, a question or an order.
