1. PURPOSE
The main function mechanical seal in a pump is to prevent leakage of liquid from
inside the pump to the outside (atmospheric side).
2. SCOPE
This procedure is used as a guide in carrying out the process to prevent fluid
leakage from a space / container that has a rotating shaft. Shifting occurs because
the mechanical device has 2 end face components (end faces) at a position of 90 °
to the axis of the shaft which is always in contact with one another because of the
force axial from the spring /spring. Mechanical seal generally installed in various
types of pumps such as centrifugal pump, gear pump, screw pump. Also can be
attached to equipmentmixer / agitator and centrifugal / screwcompressor.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES
QC, Workshop Staff (operator), Supervisor

4. WORK SEQUENCE
1. Remove all coupling fixing bolts and remove the coupling spacer from its
compartment. Then, remove the casing set bolts. The revolving part can be
removed without separating the casing and pipe flange.
2. Remove the impeller nut.
3. Remove the impeller with a special tool / tracker.
4. Remove the casing cover after loosening the gland / gland plate nuts.
5. Remove the mechanical seal.
 Loosen and remove the setscrew on the mechanical seal with an allen key.
 Remove the mechanical seal from the shaft (sleeve), be careful not to
damage the V-ring and the O-ring.
6. Mechanical seal installation.
 Replace the damaged mechanical seal with a new one. Insert it on the
shaft (sleeve) carefully.
 Put the cover back into the stuffing box so that the threads break through
the gland plate. Install a nut on the thread - then tighten it.
 Fasten the setscrew.
 Replace the impeller then tighten the nut with a key ring.
 Put the stuffing box back on the pump shell. Replace the casing bolts set
and tighten.
 Reconnect the stuffing box and motor with spacers. Perform rim & face
alignment with the dial gauge to obtain minimal alignment of the clutch
face and concentric according to manufacturer's instructions.
