QUANTIFIERS GRAMMAR

A LOT (OF) / QUITE A LOT (OF) NOT…MUCH / NOT…MANY / NOT…ANY

 Use a lot (of) with Countable and Uncountable Nouns for  Use not…much with Uncountable Nouns for a small

EXAMPLE: I drink a lot of water. EXAMPLE: I don’t drink much water

 Use quite a lot (of) for quite a big quantity.  Use not...many with Countable Nouns for a small quantity.

EXAMPLE: I drink quite a lot of water. EXAMPLE: I don’t eat many sweets.

 Use not…any for a zero quantity.

EXAMPLE: I don’t drink any water / I don’t eat any sweets.

TOO, TOO MUCH, TOO MANY ENOUGH / A LITTLE / A FEW

 Use too, too much, too many to say “more than is good”.  Use enough before a noun to mean “all that is necessary”.

EXAMPLE: I’m stressed. I have too much work. EXAMPLE: I ate enough food.

 Use too + an adjective. NOT I’m too much tired.  You can use enough after an adjective.

EXAMPLE: I’m too tired. EXAMPLE: This dress isn’t big enough.

 Use too much + Uncountable Nouns.  Use a little / very little and a few / very few to talk about
small quantities.
EXAMPLE: I drank too much water.  Use a little / very little with Uncountable Nouns and a
few / very few with Countable Nouns.
 Use too many + Countable Nouns.
EXAMPLE: I eat a little meat / He has very few friends.
EXAMPLE: I ate too many sweets.

You can use these expressions to answer How much (Uncountable / Singular) or How many (Countable / Plural).

EXAMPLES:
A: How much water do you drink? B: A lot. / Quite a lot. / Not much. / None.
A: How many sweets did you eat? B: A lot. / Quite a lot. / Not many. / None.
