Customs and traditions in Great Britain

There are a lot of customs and traditions in Great Britain. Some of them are ones we are all used to,
but some are extremely weird, bizarre, and British to be said.
It seems to me that the right way to start is to begin with the well-known holidays that are known
and celebrated in Europe as well. Perhaps the most important one is Christmas. People decorate their
houses with tinsels, garlands, wreaths, and so on, and, of course, you should not forget about the Christmas
tree that is one of the biggest decorations. The British sing carols and have dinner where traditional food
are, and usually it ends up with a pudding with a silver coin for luck inside.
As every country in the world, the UK has its own festivals. One of them is Notting Hill Carnival, the
largest street one in the Europe. It is the most colourful and impressuve event in London. Every year over
two million people attend this two-day celebration of Caribbean culture.
The child game with conker has become one of the traditions in Great Britain. First of all, a conker is
the seed of the chestnut tree. What are the rules exactly? Well, at first you should make hole in a conker,
then stretch the string and try to break your opponents’ conker by hitting it. Quite simple, and it’s a lot of
fun!
As for me, the most weird festival in Great Britain is Cheese Rolling. I know that it is forbidden for
to-day, but it is still organizated in an inofficial way. I can’t understand why people try to overtake it. It may
be fun, but it’s also dangerous for your health and makes no sence.
I see British people are fond on their traditions and keep it alive no matter what, but the one of
wearing wings in courts is so weird. It seems funny and silly for me, to be frank. It doesn’t look serious to
solve the case while wearing it.
I would absolutely like to take part in Halloween. I’m really crazy about the scary stuff. I like to hear
and tell spooky stories, watch horror TV films, and be afraid of something. I would carve a pumpkin and
make a jack-o’-lantern. Also I’d decorate the apartment I live in with bats, webs, ghosts, and witches. I’d the
dress up, go to a party and have a wonderful time ever. I think I’m too old to do trick-or-treating, but if I
had an opportunity, I’d do it without any doubt.
