Sensory Experience

Class average age 20 months

Primary Objective:
Begin to participate in-group physical activities, such as “ring around the rosey”.

Secondary Objective(s)
Match objects; recognize patterns

Experience description:

Children were more engaged in the activity than I have anticipated. They enjoyed playing
with the colorful pom poms as they were feeling the texture of the tiny “balls”. They
were throwing them across the table and on the floor but most of them did end up in the
egg carton where it was suppose to end up in. Overall, it was a fun experience for the
children and it was an enjoyable experience for me to see their fun playing.

Materials

Egg Carton painted primary colors

Primary colored pom-poms

Scaffolding (child’s prior knowledge to build on):

Children had prior experience with colors and colorful balls, but this time the goal was to
place the colorful pom poms into the colorful egg carton.

Plan for carrying out experience (what caregiver will do):

Caregiver sat at the table where the colored egg carton and the colored pom poms were
placed and invited the children to come and play. Since the pom poms are choking hazard
for young children, the caregiver sat at the table the entire time to make sure that no
accident will happen. Caregiver guided the children and encouraged the children to allow
other children to participate in the sorting of pom poms.
Outcome (was activity of interest to children – why/why not, Was outcome what was
expected, Did something happen that wasn’t expected, What might be changed/added to
make experience more interesting to children, or other):

The outcome of the activity was not as expected because children did not exactly
understand the concept of sorting but regardless they had a lot of fun with throwing the
pom poms and placing them back into the egg carton (not by color).
