MCE 482 Intermediate fluid mechanics

CFD project

Purpose
The purpose of this project is to help you practice solving a fluid mechanics problem using CFD commercial
packages such as Ansys-Fluent, Comsol, Autodesk-CFD...etc.

Task
Your task is to build a numerical model using any CFD package to solve any fluid mechanics problem relevant
to topics covered in the course. Problems at the end of chapter 15 in the textbook can give you ideas of types
of problems to solve. Other examples include:

Flow over an airfoil Flow over a cylinder Flow inside an elbow to model
secondary flow (Dean flow)
Flow in non-circular ducts Flow over a backstep Flow of cold air from an AC inlet
in a closed room
Split of flow inside a pipe into two Blood flow in arteries with Flow over a heat sink for
branches stenosis electronics cooling
Flow between two concentric Merging of flow inside two pipes Flow over a rotating disc
cylinders into one branch
Flow over a hot cylinder

Teams
You can form teams of up to 3 students per team to conduct this project.

Deliverables
Each team should submit:
• A report detailing the model they built and the results they obtained. The report should not exceed 15
pages and should follow the format outlined on the next page.
• A video no longer than 15 minutes showing how the CFD model was built. The video narration should
be done by all team members. The video should be uploaded to Youtube and the link clearly
highlighted on the first page of the report.
Points will be awarded based on the perceived level of effort, complexity of problem, quality of work, and
using best practices to get accurate results (mesh dependence test, analytical verification,…etc).

Project deadline
Thursday December 10th at 11:59 pm.
