Two-dimensional CFD problems

Internal & External Flow

Brief description
This simulation acts as a “virtual wind tunnel” by allowing you to understand the approximate
flow features down the centerline of different vehicles. Freestream velocity and car bodies can
be easily changed, allowing for comparisons and flow sweeps.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to ….

• Understand the relationship between drag, lift, Cd, and Cl on airfoil and internal flow of a
pipe

• Understanding oof the concept of geometry meshing and boundary condition

• Develop the numerical solution to a laminar/Turbulent pipe flow problem in Ansys CFD.

• Verify the numerical results from Ansys CFD.

• Creating velocity contours

• Creating pressure contours

• Plotting the velocity profile at a certain section of the pipe.

• Develop the solution to a 2D turbulent airfoil flow problem in Ansys CFD.

• Creating the velocity and pressure contours.

• Solving for the pressure, lift, and drag coefficients over the airfoil.

• Validate the numerical results from Ansys CFD by comparing with experimental data provided
by NASA.
Internal Flow in a circular pipe

Problem Specification

Consider fluid flowing through a circular pipe of constant radius as

illustrated below. The figure is not to scale. The pipe diameter D = 0.2
m and length L = 3 m. Consider the inlet velocity to be constant over
the cross-section and equal to 1 m/s. The pressure at the pipe outlet
is 1 atm. Take density ρ = 1 kg/ m3 and coefficient of viscosity µ = 2 x
10 -3 kg/(m*s). These parameters have been chosen to get a desired
Reynolds number of 100 and don't correspond to any real fluid.

Requirements:

• Velocity vectors
• Velocity Streamline
• Pressure contours
External Flow over airfoil
Problem Specification
Flow past airfoils is a well-studied canonical problem which is very useful for learning how
to apply CFD software to practical problems and for gaining physical insights about flow
past streamlined bodies.
Use the airfoil CAD on the shared drive
• Free stream Velocity: Check the attached table below
• Angle of attack: Check the attached table below
• CAD source: Check this link
• The airfoil chord length = 18 cm.
• Outlet pressure: 1atm
• The air density = 1.1767 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚^3 ,
• The Coefficient of viscosity = 1.009 ×10^(−5) 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚𝑠

Requirements:
Present the following contours for the 3-angle of attack
0-deg, 15-deg, your assigned deg
• Velocity contours
• Pressure contours
• Velocity Streamline

• You are expected to show 9-figures, 3 for each angle of attack, make
sure to comment on each comparison.
• You must add at least one image from the one you obtained while
testing the airfoil in the wind tunnel
