Assignment Task
Figure 1 shows lay out plan of a proposed steam power plant by TRM Engineering (Pvt)
Ltd. Specifications of the plant as follows.

• Maximum pressure of the working fluid 120 bar

• Minimum pressure of the working fluid 0.05 bar
• Maximum temperature of the working fluid 923 K
• Maximum mass flow rate of the working fluid 2.5kg/s
• Isentropic efficiency of steam turbine 90%
• Isentropic efficiency of feed water pump 82%
• Temperature difference at pinch point of feed water preheater 2 K
• Temperature difference between hot outlet and cold inlet of feed water preheater
6K
• Energy loss rate 8%
• Efficiency of electrical generator 95%
• Efficiency of cooling tower 70%
• Total length of feed water piping system 60m
• Total length of cooling tower piping system 50m

The company has assigned you for main three tasks relevant to the designing of steam
power plant as following.

Task 1 – Designing of fluid systems and main equipment.

Under this task, following three systems must be design based on the specifications of
the plant.

• Piping systems for water and superheated steam circuits.

• Boiler
• Cooling tower and piping system of it
You may make assumptions to simplify the systems with reasonable justifications.

Task 2 – Discuss the opportunities of integrating combined heat power system for
process heating

Systematic diagram of a general CHP plant is shown in the Figure 2. Propose a method to
implement this type of system for the steam power plant shown in the Figure 1. Provide
sample calculations to justify your recommendations.

Task 3 – Discuss PID based control systems

As the major part of this task, it is required to outline and discussed different advanced
control strategies and applications associated with steam power plants with their significant
features. Then, propose strategies to improve the performance of the steam power plant
control system for more economic and safe plant operation.

Submission Requirements:
Provide a simple report that includes the following:

• Abstract
• Content
• Introduction

4
• Method (annotated diagrams)
• Results and Discussion (table / annotations / comments)
• Conclusion including Recommendations
• References
• Appendixes

This portfolio report should be mainly formed using images and tabulated information
therefore there is little need for lengthy texts – you should not exceed 50 pages which
includes ample space for large images. An abstract is required. The portfolio report must
be in word format and submitted to LMS. You are not required to upload part files but retain
them safely on your system so they can be retrieved if requested. Refer resource materials
(eBooks, books, research articles, websites etc) to obtain any not given information and
clearly mention the references using IEEE style (It is required to mention in-text and end
text references).
