Guide Length for Assignment Part 1:Maximum 4000 words (excluding Appendix)

Part 2:Maximum 2000 words (excluding Appendix)

Additional instructions: Presenting the work of others as your own is

academic misconduct and will be subject to penalty.
If in doubt you are advised to read the university
regulations on Academic Misconduct: Cheating in
Assessment and/or consult the lecturer setting the
assignment.

Where appropriate, you may quote passages from a published text or a website, but
you must clearly indicate you are doing so and give a reference to the source. A good
introduction to searching literature and how to cite references properly is given in the
Library Services section of the Kingston University web site.
If two assignments are submitted with identical passages of text, or if an assignment
contains text from another source without proper acknowledgement, it will receive 0
marks. This is considered plagiarism and may be subject to further penalties, including
expulsion.

TWO PARTS OF THE ASSIGNMENT SHOULD BE IN SEPARATE REPORTS

Part 1 Project Brief:

In July 2007 the UK Government's Building A Greener Future: Policy Statement
announced that all new homes will be zero carbon from 2016. Assuming a three-bed
room semi-detached house in London for a family of three you are required to propose
all building elements, including construction material, insulation, windows and heating
and ventilation equipment that will be required to enable the dwelling to meet the 2016
zero carbon regulation. Installation of renewable energy (heat or electricity) producing
devices might be considered. Clearly state in your words how the existing building
materials and management practices will have to be modified to enable the new home
to meet this standard. Your answer should mention the specific initiatives that the UK
government and building material producers and supply industry have either already
taken or contemplating to take in this regard.

Your report must include:

 Literature survey (at least 7 references from peer reviewed journals) using
Harvard system of referencing
 Conceptual approach to final solution to the problem
 Function and role of the interventions/equipment/services proposed and their
brief life cycle carbon implications
 Method of analysis and estimating performance of the
interventions/equipment/services proposed
 Brief economic and cost analysis
 Discussion and evaluation
 Conclusion

Marking Scheme
50% of the marks will be for technical content and standard
25% of the marks will be for the standard of report writing, referencing, etc.
25% of the marks will be for overall professionalism and engineering judgement shown.

Part2: Statement of Assignment:

Benign Energy Technology Solutions (BETS) owns coal fuelled power plants in the UK
supplying electricity to 1 million households. Lately, BETS is planning to manufacture
and market evacuated tube flat plate solar collector (ETFPC) water heaters. Before the
ETFPSCs are taken for manufacturing, BETS has hired consultants to advise it to
ensure that the ETFPCs are environment friendly & sustainable to manufacture, ship,
use, reuse and recycle or dispose of at the end of useful life of 20-25 years. Assuming
that you are that consultant write a 2000 word report giving advice to BETS on how they
could employ the principles of DfE (eco design), life cycle design, reuse and recycle to
render ETFPC an environmentally benign product.

Your report must include:

 Literature survey (at least 5 references from peer reviewed journals) using
Harvard system of referencing
 Conceptual approach to final solution to the problem
 Function and role of the interventions/equipment/services proposed and their
brief life cycle carbon implications
 Method of analysis and estimating performance of the
interventions/equipment/services proposed
 Brief economic and cost analysis

 Conclusion
