Google Trend Insight

Worldwide Search Trend

We can see that there are
changes in Google
searches which can be
correlated to the pandemic
spread and lockdown
implementations across the
world.

Some inflections that standout are:

1) The drop in “lose weight” in March, probably as lockdowns were newly implemented in most
countries and people started relaxing in their homes.
2) Peaks of “exercise” and “lose weight” observed in May, attributable to the expectation of
lockdown openings or resumption of work from home on a larger scale across the world.
3) Resurgence of exercise, after a slow plateau and drop, after lockdown regulations were
loosened, which might be as people started moving outdoors and meeting colleagues and
friends.

India’s Search Trend

India's Lockdown Timeline
Phase 1 25-Mar
Phase 2 15-Apr
Phase 3 04-May
Phase 4 18-May
Unlock 1.0 01-Jun
Unlock 2.0 01-Jul
Unlock 3.0 01-Aug
Unlock 4.0 01-Sep
Unlock 5.0 01-Oct

We can see a clear trend in

the searches in India, which also correlates to India’s lockdown timeline to a certain extent. We
observe spikes in the searches in the period of May-June, when Indians started anticipating the unlock
and preparing for it, to meet their colleagues and friends outside their homes. This also phases down
as the Unlock restrictions still impeded social gatherings. Another peak can be observed after Unlock
4.0, where the announcement actually allowed people to meet and greet, which could be a reason for
fitness and exercise to spike up again.

However, we must remember that correlation is not causation, thus, in our study, we will aim to
explore the cause behind this trend and if this correlation is indeed appropriate.
