Question: Diseases or disabilities that could be a barrier for effective communication with elder patients

and explain reason in 2-3 sentences.

Answer:
 Dementia –This is a barrier in communication because the patient might not be able to recall
recent information which can to result to data misinterpretation.

 Alzheimer’s - Alzheimer is the most common cause of dementia, similar to dementia this is also
a barrier to communication since elder patients experience memory loss wherein you have to
constantly repeat your instruction or health teachings to them.

 Post-stroke - this condition can be a barrier to effective communication because it affects how
the patient speaks, their ability to understand what is being said and it also affects their reading
and writing skills.

 Parkinson’s - This is a barrier to communication because the patient will be having difficulties
with regards to their speech, it may be fast or slow, rushed, mumbled or slurred leading to
misinterpretation of data.

 Hearing loss – this condition comes gradually as we get older. It can be a barrier to effective
communication because the nurse patient communication will be compromised although there are
other ways to communicate but most individual are used to verbal communication.
