Dear All

As announced earlier, commemorating Swami Manavala Mamuni


650th Thirunaksatra Mahotsavam, with the grace of Acharya and
all of you, I have initiated a kinchith contribution by proposing to pres-
ent 50 Ebooks, documenting literature gifted by our poorvacharyas, In
this ebook, I present to you a collection of hymns from Nalayira
Divya prabhandham- pasurams from kaNNinuN siruttAmbu, with
notes in lucid English to encourage all to experience the tenets of Vedan-
tha as glorified by the Azhwars; So I compile these with my limited
knowledge and exposure sought from my Acharya and present the
seventh in the series of ebooks - kaNNinuN siruttAmbu, for free
sharing in the interested community.

Further in the future we shall experience many more Stotras, Rahasya


Granthas and Nalayira Divya Prabhandham all in lucid English.

In mudalAyiram, this prabandha is the last one. sreeman nAthamuni has


arranged it this way. Before and after chanting nammAzhwAr’s tiruvAi-
mozhi, this prabandha is chanted.

This prabandha is the one which enabled sreeman nAthamuni to get all
the four thousand pAsurAs from nammAzhwAr in his yOga avasta.
nAthamunihaL chanted these pAsurAs so many thousand times in his
yOga when nammAzhwAr came and taught him four thousand praband-
has of all AzhwArs. From that day onwards these prabandha came to be
popular. This prabandha as well as tiruvAimozhi are not chanted on
the streets. The tamizh poet kambar, who wrote rAmAyaNa in tamizh,
has written saDagOpa nooTTrandAdi following the style of kaNNinuN
siruttAmbu prabandha. He himself has revealed this fact.

madhurakavi AzhwAr had never showed any interest in knowing any-


thing else other than nammAzhwAr; had never sung anything else other
than nammAzhwAr’s prabandhas; had never considered anyone else as
his master other than nammAzhwAr as he was attracted by his guNAs.
Let this madhurakavi be in my mind always.

nammAzhwAr
vEdam tamizh seida he made tamizh vEdAs

vaN kuruhoor Eru he is the leader of tirukkuruhoor

engaL vAzhvu Am enru he is our life force - so saying
Ettum madhurakaviyAr praised madhurakavi AzhwAr
emmai AzhvAr he is our leader

araN is our rakshaka

madhurakavi AzhwAr always feels ‘nammAzhwAr alone is my life force;


he alone is known to me; he alone has done vEda in tamizh. He is
called mAran who is the chief of tirukkuruhoor. madhurakavi always
says ‘he is our rakshaka and our master’.

paNNiya peru mAyan ennappanil |
naNNi ten kuruhoor nambi enrakkAl
aNNikkum amudoorum en nAvukkE || One ||

kaNNi having many knots (which will irritate the skin)


nuN very fine (it may press the body)
siru very short (not very long)
tAmbinAl with such a rope
kaTTuNNa paNNiya He made Himself bound by yasOda
peru mAyan of wonderful sakti
en appanil deserting my swAmi, the sarvEswara
naNNi I approached nammAzhwAr and took his refuge
ten kuruhoor nambi enrakkAl if I say ‘nammAzhwAr is the chief of AzhwAr
tirunagari in the south
aNNikkum it is very delightful
amudoorum en nAvukkE it is like the taste of amruta to my tongue

AzhwAr says it is like amruta to my tongue to chant his names rather


than BagavAn’s. Then why should he begin the pAsura with the descrip-
tion of kaNNa? – because he is going to speak about tastier subject later
on. So he thinks ‘let me first start with the lesser taste and then go on to
a better taste’. Then why should he say ‘en appan’ with regard to
BagavAn? – in order to bring joy to nammAzhwAr who is fond of krishNa.
If AzhwAr’s joy is his goal he shouldn’t say ‘I am going to renounce Him’.
No. It is not his intention as will be shown later on. Of all the avatArAs,
nammAzhwAr had more love towards krishNa especially His stealing of
butter.

Didn’t he swoon saying ‘uraLinODu iNaindu irundu Engiya eLivE’? mad-


hurakavi had even more liking towards AzhwAr than the latter had
towards kaNNan.

kaTTuNNa paNNiya peru mAyan – not using the word ‘kaTTuNDu’ (was
bound) says ‘kaTTuNNa paNNiya’ (made Himself bound) revealing His
swatantratva. mAyan – the rope which was very short (siru) – not even
enough for one round was enough to have three rounds.

ennAvukkE – the name of nammAzhwAr is sweet as amruta to ‘my


tongue’ & not to others who don’t know AzhwAr’s greatness.

dEvu maTTrariyEn kuruhoor nambi
pAvin innisai pADi tirivanE || Two ||

nAvinAl naviTTru I praise AzhwAr with my tongue


inbam eidinEn I get Ananda out of it
avan pon aDi mEvinEn I sought AzhwAr’s beautiful tiruvaDi
meimmaiyE this is the absolute truth
maTTru dEvu ariyEn I don’t know any other God except this AzhwAr
kuruhoor nambi he is the nambi of tirukkuruhoor
pAvin in isai his pAsurAs are sweet music
pADi tirivanE I shall sing everywhere

AzhwAr says he is serving nammAzhwAr with three kAraNAs -


mEvinEn avan ponnaDi – he sought his tiruvaDi (action)

pAvin innisai pADi – I shall sing his praises (speech)

inbam eidinEn and dEvu maTTrariyEn – I feel the joy and I don’t consider
any one as equal to him (mind)

What I say is the absolute truth. I shall sing the pAsurAs till I die.

meimmaiyE – I fall at his feet only. I shall not worship any archA moorti.
It is he who is rAma and krishNa to me.

kariya kOla tiru uru kANban nAn |
periya vaN kuruhoor nahar nambikkAL
uriyanAi aDiyEn peTTra nanmaiyE || Three ||

tiri tandAhilum even if I wander (without thinking of BagavAn)


dEva pirAnuDai of emberumAn who is theleader of nitya sooris
kariya kOla tiru uru the form which is dark and huge and has
periya pirATTi in His tirumArbu.
kANban nAn I shall worship

periya vaN kuruhoor AzhwAr himself is great and is a great giver too
nahar nambikku

AL uriyanAi I am dAsa to him alone & not to anyone else


aDiyEn peTTra nanmaiyE this is the wealth I have got

He said ‘dEvu maTTrariyEn’ in the last pAsura. Now he says ‘deva


pirAnuDai ......... kANban nAn’. madhurakavi says ‘I seek dEva just
because AzhwAr seeks Him. If I seek Him myself, I feel I have commit-
ted a sin. Since I seek Him because of AzhwAr and through him, I feel it
is proper’.

4. nanmaiyAl mikka nAn maraiyALarhaL


punmaiyAha karuduvar Adalil |
annaiyAi attanAi ennai ANDiDum
tanmaiyAn sDagOpan en nambiyE || Four ||

nanmaiyAl mikka highly respected because of their virtues


nAl marai ALarhaL the vaidikAs well versed in four vEdAs
ennai aDiyEnai
punmai Aha karuduvar Adalil will discard me thinking I am full of vices.
Therefore
annai Ai like a mother
attan Ai like a father
ennai ANDiDum tanmaiyAn is of the nature to protect me at all times
saDagOpan nammAzhwAr
en nambi is my swami

madhurakavi AzhwAr feels very grateful to nammAzhwAr. ‘Before meet-


ing him, I was a worldly guy. I was neglected by all vaidikAs. Now after
meeting him, I am having a support, a rakshaka, a philosopher who loves
me and guards me. He does what all my relations would do to me all
alone. I was a useless fool; AzhwAr made me a purposeful man out of
his sheer grace. Hence, he is my guru, my swAmi and everything.

nambinEn maDavAraiyum munnelAm |

aDiyEn me (who now says ‘adiyen’ after shedding my ego)

pirar nal poruL I was desirous of possessing all the good things

Prior to meeting nammAzhwAr, I was a wicked & cruel man; all vices had
their abode in me. I wanted to possess others’ properties and wives.
Thus, I was a thief. Fortunately, I came to kuruhoor where I met my guru
(AzhwAr) and became a changed man. He took me as his possession
and made me a respectable person. All my foolishness in the form of
desire for worldly things is gone; I have become a wise man seeking only
him.

ninru steadfast in his dhyAna
tan puhazh nammAzhwAr’s fame
Etta sing
embirAn aruLinAn my swAmi has blessed me
kunram mADa having buildings tall like mountains
tiru kuruhoor nambi nammAzhwAr of tirukkuruhoor
enrum ennai always in my case
ihazhvu ilan will not neglect
kANminE you can see for yourself.

‘sadirttEn inrE’ – said AzhwAr before this pAsura. ‘what is this sadir?’
‘how does he get it?’ – these are explained in this pAsura. Not only now,
for all the times to come, he has blessed me to sing his praise. Even if I
criticize him, he will not disregard me. He has so much love for me. This
is the ‘sadir’.

7. kaNDu koNDu ennai kAri mAra pirAn


paNDai valvinai pATTri aruLinAn |
eNDisaiyum ariya iyambuhEn
oNDamizh saDagOpan aruLaiyE || Seven ||

pirAn great guide that he is


kAri mAran nammAzhwAr, the son of porkAriyAr
ennai me, who is ignorant of his greatness
kaNDu with his kaTAksha
koNDu made me his dAsa
paNDai valvinai my highly notorious old pApas
pATTri aruLinAn he destroyed without any trace of it
oN tamizh saDagOpan aruLaiyE the grace of nammAzhwAr, the great tamizh
poet
eN tisaiyum ariya iyambuhEn I shall declare loudly for all the people of all the
quarters to hear

In the last pAsura, he said ‘tan puhazh Etta aruLinAn’. What is that
puhazh? The greatness of AzhwAr lies not in Bagavat anuBava but in
changing people like me whose pApas are highly notorious. He
removed all my pApas, which is a feat impossible for me. He did it by
his mere grace on me. I shall emphatically announce this action of him
to all people of all the worlds.

8. aruL koNDADum aDiyavar inbura


aruLinAn avvaru maraiyin poruL |
aruL koNDu Ayiram intamizh pADinAn
aruL kaNDeer ivvulahinil mikkadE || eight ||

aruL koNDADum those who praise the Bagavat krupa (compassion)


aDiyavar the BaktAs
inbura to be happy
avvaru maraiyin poruL the inner meanings of those difficult-to-understand
vEdAs
aruLinAn he made it easy for me
aruL koNDu with great compassion
in tamizh in the beautiful tamizh language
Ayiram pADinAn nammAzhwAr sang thousand pAsuras of tiruvAimozhi
aruL kaNDeer his mercy alone
ivvulahinil in this world
mikkadu is very great

emberumAn has given us vEdAs and vEdAntAs. There is no compassion


greater than this’ – so say the BAgavatAs. But after nammAzhwAr has
given his tiruvAimozhi to the world, they say ‘ahA! Even BagavAn has not
given us a grantha so sweet like this. So for we had been under the impres-
sion that there is no one as compassionate as BagavAn; but now we say ‘is
there anyone greater than AzhwAr who has given us vEdAs and vEdAntAs
in tamizh so that all can go to mOksha’?

9. mikka vEdiyar vEdattin uLporuL


nirka pADi en nenjuL niruttinAn |
takka seer saDagOpan en nambikku
ATpukka kAdal aDimaippayan anrE || Nine ||

mikka vEdiyar the inner meaning of vEdAs which vaidikAs read


vEdattin uL poruL

nirka to stay permanently in his mind


pADi he gave tiruvAimozhi
en nenjuL niruttinAn AzhwAr has made me understand clearly the
vEdArtha in my mind
takka seer AzhwAr is having all auspicious guNAs
saDagOpan nammAzhwAr
en nambikku to him alone
AL pukka kAdal the desire to do kainkarya
anrE that very moment
aDimai payan the desire was fulfilled

nammAzhwAr did upadEsa of tiruvAimozhi to me in such a way that even


my ever-ignorant mind could grasp it. Out of gratitude, I wanted to do
kainkarya to him. That very moment my desire was fulfilled. nam-
mAzhwAr wanted to have samslEsha with BagavAn. ‘iniyAmurAmai’ but
BagavAn did not appear before him. After many days, BagavAn fulfilled
his desire. But here madhurakavi AzhwAr says – the very moment my
mind desired the kainkarya, that very same moment the desire was
fulfilled. Thus, AzhwAr says – the moment I said, I am sEsha to You,
that very moment I desired kainkarya to You and at that moment it was
fulfilled. They were not in three different times; it is all simultaneous.
Thus, AzhwAr reveals the power of ‘BAgavata sEshatva’ is more than
‘Bagavat sEshatva’.

10. payan anrAhilum pAngalarAhilum


seyal nanrAha tirutti paNi koLvAn |
kuyil ninrAr pozhil soozh kuruhoor nambi
muyalhinrEn undan moikazharku anbaiyE || Ten ||

payan anru there is no benefit for nammAzhwAr if


somebody is converted
Ahilum even then
pAngu alar Ahilum even if they are not fit recipients

them (tiruvaDi)

There are two kinds of AchAryAs – anuvrutti prasannAchArya and


krupamAtra prasannAchArya. Those of the first category are like tiruk-
kOTTiyoor nambi who made sree rAmAnuja to seek him eighteen times
before he could do upadEsa. The other type are those like sree
rAmAnuja, BaTTar, nambiLLai and so on who go behind those samsA-
ris who are averse to mOksha. madhurakavi AzhwAr says that nam-
mAzhwAr belongs to the second category. In AchArya hrudaya
‘tAikkum, mahanukkum, tambikkum, ivanukkum, aDi paNindavarkkumE
ivai uLLadu’.

tAi – seeta pirATTi; mahan – prahlAda; tambi – viBeeshaNa;


ivar – nammAzhwAr; ivaraDi paNindavarkkum – sree rAmAnuja.

Normally a person helps the others only for some personal benefits.
But nammAzhwAr does anugraha not for any selfish gain (payan anrAhi-
lum). He does it for even low creatures and ajnAnis like me – says
madhurakavi AzhwAr (pangu alar Ahilum). AzhwAr has come to earth
only for this purpose. So, he does it whether the samsAris are willing or
not.

11. anban tannai aDaindavarhaTku ellAm


anban ten kuruhoor nahar nambikku |
anbanAi madhurakavi sonna sol
nambuvAr padi vaihundam kANminE || Eleven ||

anban tannai emberumAn who is biased towards His BaktAs


aDaindavarhaTku ellAm towards all those BAgavatAs who have sought
BagavAn
anban (madhurakavi AzhwAr) has Bakti
ten kuruhoor nahar nambikku at nammAzhwAr
anbanAi being a Bakta
madhurakavi sonna sol this divya prabandha done by madhurakavi
AzhwAr
nambuvAr those who believe it as their refuge
padi the living place is
vaihundam kANminE is paramapada

‘anban tannai aDaindavarhaTku ellAm anban’ can mean madhurakavi


AzhwAr or nammAzhwAr. If it is nammAzhwAr – he is great, in that he
takes everyone under his tiruvaDi considering his Bakti to BagavAn. It is
the only criterion without caring for their caste or creed. If it means mad-
hurakavi AzhwAr – he had all the Bakti he had towards all the BAgavatAs
put together towards nammAzhwAr alone.

vaihundam does not here mean paramapada; it means it is paramapada


wherever You are.
