Difference between structure and architecture:

The Architecture is what you can see, feel and experience; the Structure is how the Architecture is
realised and what holds it all up. Architecture is designed by an Architect, Structure is designed by
an Engineer.

The Structural devices of architecture:

Basic types of systems include bearing-wall, post-and-lintel, frame, membrane, and

suspension. They fall into three major categories: low-rise, high-rise, and long-span.

IMPORTANCE OF STRUCTURE IN ARCHITECTURE:

The structure is an essential element,

1 - defines the shape of the architectural shape and space.

2 - The structure is contributing to the aesthetically value of the building.

3- The structural system is not exposed but still has a significant influence on the form
of the building

Geometry of form and structural function:

‘Form follows function' is a principle that proposes a building's purpose should be the starting
point for its design rather than its aesthetics.

Form follows function” means that the form of a body part or structure is related to

its function. The form or shape of a structure within an organism is correlated to the purpose
or function of that structure.

Factors affecting the selection of structural form:

 Purpose
 Requirements
 Loads
 Architectural Design
 Culture
 Geological and Geographical Condition of Site
 Climate
 Materials
 Machinery
 Manpower
 Methods
 Money
 Minute (Time)
 Technology
