effectively; and
3. determine specific reading and writing strategies that work best for you
individually.

LECTURES

CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM

Writing chapter one of research paper is very challenging. A good introduction is
essential in attracting interested readers. Chapter one start with a couple of short introductory
paragraphs. The main aim of the chapter one is to get the reader “turned on” about the
subject matter. It sets the stage for the research in order to puts the research topic in
perspective.

Also chapter one oftentimes consist of general statements about the demand for the
research. It utilizes dramatic illustrations to set the tone.

For this module, the different parts of chapter one will be discussed. These include
Background of the Study, Statement of the Problem (SOP), Conceptual Framework, Scope
and Limitation of the Study, and Significance of the Study.

1. Writing the Background of the Study

The following are the guides in writing the background of the study:

 Describe the problem situation considering global, national and / or local forces
whenever applicable.

MODULE 9

 Link the situation to an existing body of knowledge. Where applicable, present

historical development leading to the occurrence of the situation. Preferably
cite statistics to support the ideas.
 Make a determining statement that will relate the background to the research
problem.
 Citations are needed in this part of the research.

In addition, the discussion should be done very thoroughly, indicating the

rationale and objectives of the research study. This portion of the research study
should clearly indicate its “why” aspect in order to fully establish the need for the study.

2. Statement of the Problem

This consists of the statement of the main problem and the corresponding sub-
problems or specific problems.

 The main problem is generally expressed in a declarative statement in line with

the title of the study.
 It is followed by the sub-problems that are usually stated in question forms which
are clearly stated.
 Problems are based on the objectives of the research which are the following:

a. to describe or determine the status of a particular phenomenon, event, or

situation;
b. to compare characteristics based on the variables of the study; and
c. to determine if two or more variables are related.

The General Problem should:

o reflect the general objective of the research

o be based on the title of the study
o indicate the major variables and population under study

Examples:

A. Research Title: PRE-SCHOOLING AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS General Problem: This
study attempts to determine the influence of pre-schooling on the academic
performance of elementary school children with special needs in Rizal
Elementary School.

B. Research Title: LEVEL OF ACCEPTANCE OF REGULAR STUDENTS TOWARDS

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS General Problem: The main objective of this
study is to determine the level of acceptance of regular students towards
students with special learning needs in Baguio City.

MODULE 9

The Sub-problems (specific problems) should:

o be the result of logical and clear-cut analysis of the general problem

o be extensive enough in coverage as the others along mutually exclusive
dimension (no overlapping)
o be arranged in logical order from factual to analytical
o be stated in interrogative form

Types of sub-problems

A. Those that describe a phenomenon, event, characteristic, profile, degree

or level

Examples:

• What is the profile of the college faculty members of the University of

the Cordilleras according to:
a. gender,
b. age,
c. highest educational attainment,
d. academic rank, and e. training attended?

• How effective is lecture as a method of instruction as perceived by

the students?

B. Those that require comparison/test of difference

Examples:

• How do the students with mild mental retardations attitude towards

Mathematics compare according to:
a. gender,
b. socio-economic status, and
c. academic performance? 2.

• Is there a significant difference in the work values of the working

scholars in the University of the Cordilleras when grouped according
to:
a. gender,
b. course, and
c. ethnicity?

C. Those that determine relationship/association

• How do motivational goals correlate with team effectiveness among

employees?

• What is the degree of relationship between learning style of students

with autism and academic performance?

MODULE 9

3. The Theoretical / Conceptual Framework

This portion of the paper has to follow/reflect the thematic organization or

approach of all theories supporting the research study.

 The Theoretical Framework is a symbolic construction which uses abstract

concepts, facts, laws, or variables and their relations that explains and
predicts how an observed phenomenon exists and operates.

 The Conceptual Framework presents specific and well defined concepts. It

presents the indicators of the concept or variables used in the study.

Definition of Terms

 Conceptual definition are definitions given from books or dictionaries. It

reflects the academic or universal meaning of the term. It is the meaning
understood by most people and it is more abstract and formal than the
operational definition.

 Operational definition are definitions of a concept or a term by the

operations used to measure it. It is the definition of the term as used by the
researcher in his study. Operational definitions are a “must” to show how
each concept or aspect is to operate in the study.

4. Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of a study explains the extent to which the research area will be
explored in the work and specifies the parameters within the study will be operating.
Basically, this means that you will have to define what the study is going to cover and
what it is focusing on.

Similarly, you also have to define what the study is not going to cover. This will come
under the limitations. Generally, the scope of a research paper is followed by its
limitations.

Typically, the information that you need to include in the scope would cover
the following:

1. General purpose of the study

2. The population or sample that you are studying
3. The duration of the study
4. The topics or theories that you will discuss
5. The geographical location covered in the study

5. Significance of the Study

This section discusses the importance of the study to society, the country, the
government, the community, the institution, the agency concerned and the research
writer himself.

It expounds on the probable impact to education, science, technology, on-going

researches among others.

It gives the justification for the study in terms of its contribution to the theory and
practice.

t touches on the significance of the study to the researcher himself, what it does to
the profession and the difference it makes to his own professional growth.
