Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Plagiarism Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Objectives:
Students will be able to define and understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.
Students will be able to avoid plagiarism by paraphrasing.
Students will be able to use information from multiple print and media sources.
State Standards:
2.1b. Write informative/ explanatory texts that use information from multiple print and media
sources.
2.1f. Write informative/ explanatory texts that use paraphrasing and original language to avoid
plagiarism.
Context: This lesson plan is going to prepare students to understand what plagiarism is and how
to paraphrase and use their own words to avoid it. I am teaching this lesson because it is crucial
in writing. Since students have learned paragraph structure and how to introduce topics, learning
how to take information from the media and integrate it into their work is important in writing.
After this lesson, students will learn how to strengthen their writing with planning, revising, and
editing. This will help them build on personal ideas and the ideas of others.
Data: Students will be grouped randomly by choosing names from sticks. Each student will have
a popsicle stick on their desks when they enter, and they will creatively write their name on the
sticks. Once they are finished, they will bring up their decorated stick with their name and drop it
in the cup. When it is time to get into groups, I will call each group number and choose 5 random
popsicle sticks for each group.
Materials:
Introduction: Paper, pencil, Smart Board, youtube video

Teacher directed: Smart Board, PowerPoint, paper, pencil, NASA app
Collaborative: Popsicle sticks, paper, pencil, NASA app
Independent Digital: Tablet, worksheet, pencil
Closure: Tablet, Kahoot, exit ticket, pencil
Procedures:
Introduction (1 5 minutes) :
Students will come into the classroom, place their belongings except for their backpack to their
desks. They will need a piece of paper and a pencil. We will begin by watching a short youtube
video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suMza6Q8J08 ) projected on the Smart Board that
explains what happens if you plagiarize. They will take notes on important information from the
video. Then, I will ask the students to summarize the video by asking them questions such as
what is plagiarism? How do we avoid it? What happens if we plagiarize?

Teacher Directed (1 5 minutes):

I will then direct their attention to the front of the classroom. I will teach them more about
plagiarism such as how to avoid it using a powerpoint I created about plagiarism on the Smart
Board. Also, I will show them how to take information from any website or book, and put the
text into their own words. I will show this step by step by using a passage from the NASA app
that the students will also be using for the collaborative part of the lesson. The passage can be
from anywhere on the website as long as it is three sentences. I will copy and paste the passage
into a word document and explain ways to put the passage into my own words and then create a
new passage in my own words underneath of the original passage. They will be interacting and
helping me with this process so they can get involved in the lesson. They will also use their piece
of paper to add detailed notes from this lesson.

Collaborative (1 5 minutes) :

After I complete my lesson, I will pass out popsicle sticks to each of the students. They will get
five minutes to write their name on the popsicle stick and decorate the other side how they would
like. Once they are completed, they will place their sticks in the cup at the front of the classroom.
The students will then get into groups based on the random popsicle sticks. There will be five
groups, and each of them with five students. I will draw five sticks out from the cup for each
group so that the group is random. This will also allow students to get to know other people in
their class. In each group, they have a different section from the NASA app that they have to
read as a group. The passages are just different sections of the NASA app. They will all help
each other find a three sentence passage from the section they are provided and put it into their
own words. They will only need to turn in one paper for the group since they all have to try to
work together. Each group will have a volunteer to read out the original passage and the new
passage that the group created in their own words.

Independent Digital (25 minutes):

Students will quietly go back to their original seats and direct their attention to the front of the
classroom. I will have two students help pass out the worksheet. This worksheet has a passage
from the book, Charlotte's Web, and the students will paraphrase the passage on their own into
their own words. The passage is a six sentence paragraph so it will take the students about 15-20
minutes to complete this assignment.

Closure (30 minutes) :

For the final part of the lesson, the students will play a Kahoot that I created about plagiarism.
They will use their school tablets to access the website and play the ten question game. The
winner gets to choose two pieces of candy from the candy box. Before they leave, they will fill
out a short exit ticket that asks them how confident they are with understanding what plagiarism
is and how to avoid it.
Rationale:
NASA App:
I used this app because I wanted the passage that the students used to be from a factual source.
When writing papers, sources should be from accurate peer reviewed articles or factual websites
so I thought it would be a great idea to use an example in the lesson.
Copyright and Fair Use Animation video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suMza6Q8J08
I used this video because it is short and easy for younger students to understand. It gives the
students a basic understanding of plagiarism to introduce our lesson. It aligns with the lesson
plan and state standards.

Kahoot:
This interactive game helps the students see what they learned from the lesson and see how
confident they are with the topic of plagiarism,
