Date SMART Goal

December 2-6, 2019 1. Arrive by 7:30 am each morning.
2. Keep my CSL/Practicum binder organized with all required documents
from Associate Teacher and Practicum supervisor.
3. Review Grade 5 Science Human Organs Systems Unit with Associate
Teacher in order to successfully teach all lessons.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to be on time and prepared each day. It is also
important for a teacher to stay organized and take feedback from others,
whether positive and/or constructive, in order to better their teaching
strategies.
Reflection I arrived every morning just before 7:30 am to ensure I could put my lunch in
the staff room fridge, organize my workspace, and prepare my lessons for the
day. I also kept my CSL/Practicum binder organized and added my unit plan,
lesson plans, and accompanying activities and handouts. Finally, I implemented
the feedback and considerations my Associate Teacher provided me with for
me Grade 5 Human Organs System Unit. I successfully taught the Activation
Lesson, Lesson 1, and Lesson 2.
December 9-13, 2019 1. Look at and understand the Individual Education Plans of all students in
the class.
2. Utilize daily preparation time 10-11:30 am productively and wisely to
avoid having to bring any workload home.
3. Take time to further research the Empower Reading program.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to be aware of each student’s strengths and needs,
as well as the overall strengths and weaknesses of the class. It is also important
for a teacher to use preparation time well in order to avoid having to put time
in before school/after school or having to bring school work home. Lastly, it is
important that a teacher is aware of the programs the students are partaking
in, and to further their understanding of these programs.
Reflection I took time during my preparation time at the beginning of the week to read
over and make notes on each student’s Individual Education Plan. This allowed
me to better understand the strengths and needs of each student, and plan my
lessons according to the criteria from the Ontario Education curriculum that
each student is working on. During my daily preparation time, I also ensured
that all photocopies for my lessons were made, correction of student’s work
was completed, and further planning and adaptation to my lesson plans was
made if needed. Finally, I researched the Empower Reading program online and
went over the workbooks and teaching books.
December 16-20, 1. Implement feedback that was provided from Week 1 and Week 2 by
2019 continuing to modify lessons as needed.
2. Ensure I am moving around the classroom to distribute my time and
attention with each student during the lessons I am teaching and
throughout the day.
3. Complete and review with Associate Teacher final grading for science
human body unit and multiplication and division unit.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to review and adapt their lessons both prior to
teaching the lesson, while teaching the lesson (if needed), and following
teaching the lesson. It is also important for a teacher to ensure they are
distributing their time and attention between students. Lastly, it is important
for a teacher to accurately assess and evaluate student learning from the units
that were of focus.
Reflection I was able to implement feedback that was provided to me and appropriately
modify my lessons to ensure there was an appropriate amount of time before
the holidays to complete the unit. The week went by fast, and there was a
decent amount of time that still needed to be allocated to the science
culminating task, as well as material to cover for division. I also made a mental
note to ensure I was dedicating my time and attention equally among the
students of the class during the periods I taught, as well as the periods I was
assisting. I found that I was able to build a stronger rapport with each student
because of this. Finally, I accurately assessed and evaluated each student’s
learning for the Science Human Organ Systems Unit and the Mathematics
Number Sense and Numeration Multiplication and Division Unit.
January 8, 2020 1. Assist students in getting back into the school routine by ensuring
smooth transitions and continuing to build rapport.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to re-establish the school routine after an extended
period of time away from school.
Reflection I was able to follow the regular class schedule for Wednesdays. I enforced
classroom expectations and checked in with each student about how their
holidays were.
January 22, 2020 Overview PM Benchmark January evaluation with Associate Teacher, both prior
to evaluation, with the implementation of the evaluation, and post the
evaluation.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to understand various reading levels and to be able
to make time to evaluate students at various points throughout the school year.
Reflection I was able to compare PM Benchmark levels of all students in my class from the
beginning of the school year, to halfway through the school year. I was
pleasantly surprised that all students showed progress in their oral reading level
and overall comprehension.
January 29, 2020 Connect with the Speech Language Pathologist that works with the students of
the Language Learning Development class to find out what the student’s
strengths and weaknesses are specifically in terms of their expressive language.
Sit in on a session if possible.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to connect and communicate with all individuals
involved in a student’s learning.
Reflection I was able to speak with the Speech Language Pathologist about each student in
my class. I felt that it was important that I took the time to do this, and was
pleased with how receptive the Speech Language Pathologist was with sharing
information and teaching me a bit more about his expertise.
February 12, 2020 Lead language lesson with limited to no assistance from supply teacher.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to take initiative and demonstrate leadership when
a member of the team is absent (Associate Teacher had a meeting in the
morning, therefore I offered to plan and implement a language lesson with the
class during her absence).
Reflection I was able to lead the full language lesson with no assistance from the supply
teacher. I read the story “How to Fill Your Bucket” to the class and guided a
group discussion. I then completed each student’s weekly dictation and
checked over each student’s weekly word sort activity. I felt as though I
organized my time well to complete what I had planned and that the lesson
went smoothly.
February 19, 2020 Participate in the staff Soup Club by signing up and bringing homemade soup,
bread, and butter to serve at first nutrition break.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to create a positive relationship with co-workers
and team members. By participating in small social initiatives, a teacher will
gain a better sense of belonging and get to know others that they are working
with.
Reflection I brought broccoli cheddar soup, baguette, and butter to serve. I received many
compliments about my contribution and many staff members appeared
surprised to see a student teacher being so involved. I felt proud to have been
able to participate in this event and get to know some of the other teachers at
Hilson Avenue Public School.
February 26, 2020 Engage students in health lesson about substance abuse using various media
platforms to capture their attention.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to make note of the interest of their students in
order to be successful in presenting difficult or least preferred subject matter.
Reflection I created a Kahoot quiz as well as a Jeopardy game to present the topic of
cannabis to the students. All students appeared engaged and were able to
participate further in the discussion about cannabis after participating in my
warm up activities (hook).
March 4, 2020 Successfully lead an anti-bullying lesson with the General Learning Program
class.

Rational
It is important for a teacher to share their expertise with not only their class,
but also with others if possible. After successfully leading an anti-bullying lesson
with the Language Learning Disabilities class, I offered to lead it once again for
the General Learning Program class.
Reflection I showed the General Learning Program class an anti-bullying video that
focused on the idea of being an ‘upstander’. All students appeared engaged and
were able to correctly act out the roles of a bully, a bystander, and an
upstander. I was happy with the overall product of the ‘upstander’ paper t-shirt
cut outs the students designed and was proud that the teacher was going to
put them up in the hallway.
March 11, 2020 Review unit plans for upcoming weeks of practicum (math, science, and health),
as well as lesson plans (physical education).
Reflection I completed all required unit plans and lesson plans for my upcoming weeks of
practicum prior to March 11 in order for my Associate Teacher and me to have
time to review them and for me to make any necessary changes. I was
receptive to the feedback she provided for me and I look forward to
implementing what I have prepared with my class.
