Whole class. First, work alone. On a piece of paper, write 3 sentences about yourself.
Look at the example on the right.
Now your teacher will collect all the papers
and give you someone else’s paper. Ask yes-no I live in Milan.

Groups of 3. Imagine the characters in the video are talking about their jobs and the things they
like. Take turns reading their sentences. Match each character’s sentences to the correct picture and
name. Write the name in the blank. Use this language:

Role Play: Are You from Silica?

Groups of 4. Look at the pictures of the characters on page 4. Choose a person to be.
Introduce yourself as this person to the people in your group.
Use this language:
A: Hello. I’m Kate. I’m a travel agent. B: Nice to meet you. I’m Dave Chen.
I own the Rock Café.
When everyone has said their names, try and remember who they all are.
Ask each other questions like this:
A: Excuse me. Are you Kate? My B: Yes, I’m Kate Taylor . . . Ah, you’re
name’s Dave Chen. the owner of the Rock Café!
A: Excuse me. Are you Kate Taylor? B: Yes, I’m Kate. But I’m sorry, what’s
your name again?

Hidden Conversations

Pairs. Cover your partner’s side of the page. There are 2 conversations. Listen carefully to your
partner, then choose the next sentence. Student A, to begin, choose either “Are you from the travel
agency?” or “You look familiar.”

Appendix
Instructions for Board Games
Use these instructions for the games on pages 3, 16, 28, 47, and 51.
Groups of 4 (2 pairs). Use 1 book and 1 coin. Pairs compete against each other. Each
pair needs 1 marker.
Pairs 1 and 2: Put your markers on the “Start” square. To move forward on the
board, toss the coin. One side of the coin = move 1 space; the other side of
the coin = move 2 spaces.
Pair 1: Begin playing. Toss the coin and move your marker to the correct square.
Use the cues and/or pictures in the square and/or in the middle of the
board to complete the task. Look at the example on the page for more
information.
Pair 2: Make sure Pair 1 completes the task correctly. If you aren’t sure, ask your
teacher.
Pair 1: If you are correct, your marker can stay on the square. If you are not
correct, move the marker back to where you started.
Pair 2: Toss the coin and move to the correct square. If you land on the square
with Pair 1’s marker on it, move to the next square. Complete the task.
Pairs 1 and 2: Take turns. Play until one pair gets to the “Finish” square.
