UNIT 16
DESCRIBING PLACE

Describing is one of things that people usually do in daily life. In describing, there are some
generic structures as follow:
a. Identification
Identify or write a general statement of the place, person, or thing that you want to describe.
Example: My flat is very comfortable for living.
b. Descriptions
Elaborate the description of the place, person, or thing. To make it more vivid and real, the
writer needs to incorporate five sensory words such as sight, smell, taste, hearing, and
touch.
Example: My lovely room has 8 m2 in width, and it is painted green. My room also has a
small couch.
c. Conclusion
This part may be included or not. It covers restatement or conclusion of the paragraph.
Example: In summary, I love my flat because it makes me relax.

In descriptive paragraph, the writers usually use a simile to strengthen the paragraph. Simile
is figure of speech in which two fundamentally unlike things are explicitly compared,
usually in a phrase introduced by like or as.
For example:
a) He was brave as a lion in a fight.
b) He swam like a fish through rough waters.
c) My room was adorable as a king’s room.

Let’s Speak – University of Darwan Ali Page 50

 Description of a Place
In describing a room, the object locations in the rooms should be clear; the details should
be arranged logically and systematically. It will help the readers to visualize the description
in their minds. There should also be a controlling idea because it gives a paragraph a focus.
Example:

relax myself and feel better. It is my room. I love my room and I feel comfortable

UNIT 19
TELEPHONING

Telephoning is an important part in doing business. It is important to learn key vocabulary

used when telephoning; telephone conversations use a number of standard phrases. Telephone
conversations, especially business telephone conversations, also follow certain patterns:
 Someone answers the phone and asks if he/she can help.
 The caller makes a request - either to be connected to someone or for information.
 The caller is connected, given information, or told that he/she is not in the office at the
moment.
 If the person who is requested is not in the office, the caller is asked to leave a message.
 The caller leaves a message or asks other questions.
 The phone call finishes.

1. Here are examples of typical telephoning language:

a. Getting through

You : “Can I speak to (Mr Smith), please?” or “Is (Mr Smith) there, please?”
Receptionist : “May I ask who’s calling?” or “Could I have your name, please?”
You : “Yes, this is Tom McIvor speaking.”

b. Leaving or taking a message

Receptionist : “I’m afraid Mr Smith is…

… out of the office today.”
… off sick today.”
… in a meeting.”
… on holiday.”
or “I’m afraid his line is engaged.”
“…Would you like to leave a message?”
You : “Could you ask him to call me back?” or “Could you ask him to return my
call?”
Receptionist : “Does he have your number?” or “What’s your number, please?”

Let’s Speak – University of Darwan Ali Page 59

The receptionist uses “I'm afraid” or “I'm sorry” if he or she can’t connect you. If the
receptionist doesn’t offer to take a message, you can ask to leave one.

You : “Could I leave a message, please?”

Receptionist : “Yes, certainly.” or “Yes, of course.”

Practice the following dialog with a partner.

Caller : Hello. May I speak to Mrs. Sansa?
Secretary : Who‘s calling, sir?
Caller : This is Jonathan from Assai Tour and travel.
Secretary : She is on the other line Mrs. Sansa, do you mind holding for a moment?
Secretary : Yes, sure.

Task 1
Choose your partner and make a telephone conversation based on this situation. Someone
calls to talk to your boss, Ziya Inara. Ask the caller to spell his/her name and company
name so you can write it down. Ziya Inara is not available- she is in a meeting. Offer to
take a message or say she will call back today. If you plan to ask Ziya Inara back, get a
phone number.

Task 2
Act out the following telephone conversation with a partner. Use the expressions you have
learnt.

Nako Anggara from PT. King’s talks to the customer service of Resort Sampit. He
asks about the reservation for dinner on Saturday for five people. They finish the
conversation politely and ring off.

Samuel from AAC finance asks “Will the new cars come by the end of the month?“
The answer is “Yes“. They finish the conversation politely and ring off.

Fernandes from life insurance company asks Mrs. Arya the question: “Have you
received our cheque?” The answer is “Yes.“ They finish the conversation politely
and ring off.

UNIT 20
PERFORMING A JOB INTERVIEW

For some people, job interview could be frustrating. However, each time a person faces
hardship and difficulty, ease comes with them. You may try this when you are about to have a
job interview: practice answering the common questions, such as: “tell me about yourself” and
“tell me about your experiences.” Either way, you may write the answer down in order to
memorize them in your brain.

Study this following Essential Job Interview Tips and Tricks.

There are some common questions that are asked during the interview and appropriate
responses to those questions.
I was born and raised in Sampit. I attended University
of Darwan Ali and earned my Bachelor degree in
Tell me about Computer and science. I have worked for 2 years as a
programmer in Banjarmasin in one of the greatest
yourself. companies there.

This question is meant as an introduction. Do not focus too specifically on any one area.
The above question will often be used to help the interviewer choose what he/she would like
to ask next. While it is important to give an overall impression of who you are, make sure
to concentrate on work related experience. Work related experience should always be the
central focus of any interview.

I'm looking for a position in which I

You should be willing to take an entry level position in an English speaking company as
most of these companies expect non-nationals to begin with such a position.

Can you tell me about your I made some programs to help other
responsibilities at your last divisions. Besides, I had to recover the
job? new brand that had already been old
fashion.

Notice the amount of detail necessary when you are talking about your experience. One
of the most common mistakes made by foreigners when discussing their former
employment is to speak too general. The employer wants to know exactly what you did
and how you did it; the more details you can give, the more the interviewer knows that
you understand the type of work. Remember to vary your vocabulary when talking about
your responsibilities. Also, do not begin every sentence with "I". Use the passive voice,
or an introductory clause to help you add variety to your presentation
For example: The newest brand in my previous company was made by me.

I work well under pressure. When there is a deadline, I can

well. I remember one week when I had to do “teaching street
children” program from Monday morning to Thursday
evening and reported out by Friday at 5 p.m. I finished all the
reports ahead of time without having to work overtime.

This is not the time to be modest! Be confident and always give examples.
Examples show that you are not only repeating words you have learned, but
actually do possess that strength.

What is your I am going mad when my co-workers are

greatest weakness? not doing their job well. However, I am
aware of this problem, and before I say
anything to anyone, I ask myself why the
colleague is having difficulties.

This is a difficult question. You need to mention a weakness that is actually strength.
Make sure that you always mention how you try to improve the weakness.

Here are some important questions during a job interview. You are given some examples
of how to answer them in “Essential Job Interview Tips and Tricks” in the above section.
However, you need to fill in the blank by giving some alternative answers. One answer to
the question has been provided for you as an example.
