Finding the main idea or theme
• One of the most important aspects of good reading
comprehension
• easy to confuse the main idea or theme with the subject.
However, when you look past the facts and information to the
heart of what writers are trying to say, and why they are
saying it, that’s the main idea or theme.
Pay special attention to the details and the facts
make a habit of trying to identify the author’s main
idea;
also, try to think of the author’s motive for writing
the passage.
Ask the questions, “Who? What? When? Where? How?
and Why?”
