Dan Martin believes that the signing of Chris Froome to Israel Start-Up
Nation brings more than just a rich palmarès to the team and that the
arrival of the four-time Tour de France winner will help every rider on the
team to improve the entire roster.

“What he brings to the team is really underestimated,” Martin told Advertisement

Cyclingnews in a podcast interview. “Everyone sees the results side of the
things, but the aura around him and the professionalism that he brings
will help everyone look in the mirror and improve themselves. That’s
something that has been massively underestimated by those outside of
the team but that’s why he’s been signed.”

Froome arrives at Israel Start-Up Nation after 11 years at Team Sky/Ineos

in which he won every Grand Tour at least once. In 2019, he su"ered a
career-threatening crash at the Critérium du Dauphiné, but after a lengthy
rehabilitation he returned to competition at the UAE Tour in February of
this year.

Dan Martin should just ride the TDF for a stagewin and with the aim of being
100% for the Olympics, perhaps also stopping a week early. He will struggle to
be top 10 if he rides the GC and that would also cost him a great chance at the
olympics.

So it's not about results, but "aura". You need to be top dog to have any kind of
aura.

Great comment, as winning the Tour de France and Vuelta in 2017 and
the Giro in 2018, must have been done in his retirement years?
2△ ▽ • Reply • Share ›

Coaster > Hi • 17 hours ago

Let's see. He won the Giro two (and a half) years ago then, just before the
the TdF one (and a half) years ago he had a career (and possibly life)
threatening crash which kept him out of action for about a year. This year
he got the go ahead to finally start full-on training and ~ about 9 months
later rode a pretty bloody respectable Vuelta.
Now he's 'targetting' the TdF again. Big ask but it's a worthy target...

Bashly > Hi • 18 hours ago

No his career is not over until he says so,you perhaps mean his best
years as a rider. What if he becomes a Team Director and leads a team to
its first win in Tour de France for example would that not still be his career
in cycling?

Froome is bringing something important but Dan just can't nail down what that
is.

He can teach them to stare at their power meters. Riders who do
that have an "Aura" about them.

is it not a bit insulting to all the other team riders, and to the team, to say that
froome's arrival will raise everyone's professionalism?
"the professionalism that he brings will help everyone look in the mirror and

have the other team riders won 7 grand tours?

Extra Leggeri > daytripper • 20 hours ago • edited

Listening to various team owners, managers, riders and staff on various
podcasts over the last decade, the general impression is Sky raised the
level of professionalism & all the teams have had to step up their game
and why the sport is so much more professional a decade later. Froome
was at the front of that change, so would appear, Dan like many others in
many teams agree Froome will bring that to ISN.

daytripper > Extra Leggeri • 19 hours ago

ahhh soooo, froome will bring 'marginal gains' to the new team,
but how will he do it without dave brailsford and the good doctor
freeman?
2△ ▽ 2 • Reply • Share ›

Extra Leggeri > daytripper • 19 hours ago

Don't think those staff were talking marginal gains, they
were talking about being more professional and focused on
winning and how to achieve that. Freeman doesn't explain
that, they beat riders working with Ferrari anyway.
△ ▽ • Reply • Share ›

Cliff Lee > Extra Leggeri • 13 hours ago

I'd agree with that. Froome's work ethic and mental
strength is incredible, and he won't settle for a haphazard
or sub optimal approach to nutrition, training, or teamwork.
It will almost certainly raise the game of all the riders on the
team, whether they like it or not.

Froome has a template on which he has won loads of

grand tours, you'd imagine the ISN's DS would want to
implement it to the letter as best as they are able, whether
or not Froome is the one that will land them strong results.

Wasn't Dan Martin the rider who supposedly oversaw Froomes practice accident

Martin & Neil Stephens were in the UAE team car about 20m behind the
Ineos team car following Froome and saw him hit the wall and stopped to
see if they could help.

Dan Martin has to say positive things about Chris Froome, but obviously knows
he can't quote results/wins etc...because it looks like there will not be any.
The same thing is happening over at Quick-Step with Mark Cavendish,
"experience, know-how, example" etc...because, again there is no form to speak
of.
2△ ▽ 1 • Reply • Share ›

imo > Sq Mile News • 8 hours ago

Champions like Froome and Cavendish bring a lot of publicity for the
sponsors, which is the only reason why they are sponsoring. Other riders
still look up to those kind of champions and it does give them a boost
and it gives the whole team a boost. There experience can be invaluable.
Their best years as a rider may have been over, but Froome was still
improving this year and, if he can make another step next year, may still
be able to compete at the highest level in grand tours imo.
For a sprinter like Cavendish it may be a little more difficult to get his full
explosive power back, but even that I don't rule out. It would be a pity if
cycling prematurely lost such colourful riders.

Cavendish?

It will be interesting what odds the bookies give Froome of
winning another TDF.
